Hi All, hoping to get some input on my questions here.

I found a 2000 LC for $3500 near me. Going to look at it after work, so I'll know some more by then. Might be able to get a CARFAX report out of the wholesaler. Right now I can simply see that it has 56 records--could be good!

So far the photos look pretty good--interior looks clean but a little scuffed. The rear taillight is broken, but I can't see any actual dents on the quarter panel (scraped a pole maybe?).

Toyota Service History goes back to 191k miles. Records say timing belt was changed at 191k, so I'll look for a sticker on the engine for any more recent replacements.

A 2009 record says this about the exhaust:
CUSTOMER STATES THAT WHEN
VEHICL E IS PARKED NEXT TO A
WALL THEY HEAR A TCKING TYPE
NOISE COMING FROM VEHICLE. ~|~
~|~RIGHT EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS
CRA CKED AND MUFFLER IS
RUSTED OUT

And then a 2011 record says exhaust manifold has a leak, so don't know if that was ever fixed. The one time I replaced an exhaust manifold was on a 1992 Mercury Sable and that was a hell of a job. Thoughts?

A January 2016 record says something about the throttle body. Not sure what would cause this, or how to see if it still persists:
"CUSTOMER REPORTS THAT THE
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS COMING
ON. CHECK AND ADVISE. ~|~
~|~323000 FOUND CODE P1121
ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSOR
RANGE/PERFORMANCE PROBLEM.
SYSTEM CHECKS OUT AT THIS
TIME. MAY HAVE BEEN A ONE TIME
OCCURRENCE. ADVISE CUSTOMER
THAT IF THE CODE COMES BACK,
MOST LIKELY CAUSE IS THE
THROTTLE BODY."

Front left sway bar link replaced in 2012. Not sure what would cause this to be needed...accident? Off road abuse?

The price is so low, that even for the mileage I think it could be a good adventure vehicle. But maybe the above issues would cause too much headache?

Thanks for your input!

I should add, if I remember my Slee 100 guide, 2000 should be the year for VSC and ATRAC. So, no rear locker but still ATRAC performance. Anything else I should know in that arena? If I got the vehicle I might eventually add an air locker, but want to be sure I have some good performance until I could afford it.

I like the idea of not having a navigation screen...but don't like the idea of a 4-speed transmission as much. At this price though it'd be for fun, not necessarily a daily driver.

I thought I wouldn't like the 4spd, and would miss the 5sp, but in real life use it doesn't really bother me. Fourth gear seems tall enough, and the engine is torquey enough that it pulls satisfactorily in any gear. I'm actually very happy with the engine/trans horsepower/torque/gearing balancing act. Well engineered and thought out by Toyota. My only complaint is that the trans upshifts too early when it is cold, so I stick it in "L" or "2" as required. After about 5 min of driving, all is well again, and I leave it in "D", where it performs very well.

Thanks for the encouragement there, man. That's good to hear. Any thoughts about the mechanical stuff? The price is really low, but maybe there's a reason for that...

I'm not really qualified to comment! But you could do a few repairs and still be ahead at that price. My truck also ticks from exhaust manifold too, but only when cold. Two minutes later and the tick goes away. Seems to be a very common problem, and for many, it doesn't really get any worse. Can you have it inspected by a good mechanic, or do you have to buy it where it sits?

I've got a good mechanic, for sure. I don't think I'd deal with someone who wouldn't let me take it to them, hah.

RUST. -RUST is what kills these trucks... nothing else will. nothing. $3500 price=RUST.

Dunno know about the other stuffs, but sway bar link can snap off due to age, so not necessarily due to accidents or abuse. I replaced all of them and its bushings at 200K, and I believe I broke some of sway bar links in the process. I consider the bushings and links as wearable items, like tires and brake pads. Good luck!

tacoduck, I'm inclined to agree that that would be the reason for the price. We'll see in a few hours.

Just for comparison sake, this one is at around same price. Pretty severe rust on body imo but has a lot of new parts put in.

Just remember, rusty trucks need love too.... as long as the frame is solid. Not to mention, it isn't painful when a rusty truck gets trail damage. I look forward to hearing what kind of condition the 100 is in.

Heh, sure they do. And it's definitely a bonus to not worry about trail damage. That example from Lexington is too much for me, to be honest. I need to be able to wrench on this thing, so if the nuts and bolts are all rusted to hell, that's gonna be a lot of headache even for simple stuff.

She was in pretty bad shape underneath for sure, so I passed. Interior was pretty nice though.

One of the owners had a pretty sweet 2-door truck bed G-wagen from 1983. That was cool!

The hunt continues I suppose...

Oh he!! no. Run away.

Oh wow. That rig should just be parted out!

About right for the Mid-Atlantic states. I passed on a few that were this rusty.

not as bad as I thought it would be...
