I usually hang out in the 80 series area but I have found a 2002 TLC with only 11k miles. What kind of mpg could I expect if I were to buy it? I am getting 12-13 mpg around town and 15-16 mpg on the freeway in my '96 FZJ80. Is it about the same?

The dealer is asking $33,140. Is this too much even with the low miles? I am not sure what the 100 series came with but this one seems to have everything except the kitchen sink. Were diff lockers an option for the 100 series like it was for the 80's?

Thanks in advance.

That's waaaaay too much. Waaay. Waaaaaaaay. Too much.

You could find the updated 03 in that price range. Sounds like the GM turned in his demo. $30K would be ALL the money for that truck.

Milage will be just a little better than your 80. Diff locks not available from the factory after 2000 when they added TRAC. TRAC is liked by most with the 2000+ and you can still add ARBs to lock it up.

2000-2003 is generally considered the sweet spot for the 100 though. Intitial bugs somewhat worked out but before too much unreliable bling electronics were added.

A lot of changes were made in 03. See slee's write up. Many of them good (5 speed tranny etc) Extra bling stuff is also there. I am to new in the 100 series to comment on issues. I have none so far. I think that price is high. Get a newer one with more miles on it for the same price or less.

if it's really 11K miles, it's hard to put a figure on the value, too subjective. May be less attractive for an LC than most cars, though, cuz they are more reliable so higher mileage is less an issue.

so, whatever it's worth to you...!

a few years ago I "inherited" a 10 year old grandpa car with 14k on the clock. It sat in a dark garage and was pampered like baby. Well that's nice and all, but from all that stagnant time that thing had a ton of strange little electrical problems. I guess all the down time corroded electrical connections and such. Stuff would work, then not work, then work, and not work... you get the idea.

2002 is still semi-new so you probably would not have the same problems.

It could be a fair value depending on a lot of factors, and it could be a rip off. If it was garaged, had all service faithfully done, it could be a fair value. If it is so low in miles because it was from a big city in the rust belt, in a body shop for a year or two, etc.... it could be a rip off.

Unless the dealer is willing to include a 5 year/100K bumper to bumper warranty (e.g. Toyota Platinum with $0 deductible), then I would be suspicious of the actual condition and consider it overpriced until proven otherwise.

Mileage will be similar to slightly better than your 80. There are no standard diff locks because the 02 has TRAC. The 02 is considered one of the best trouble free years for the 100, and last year with the 4spd AT.

It did seem a little high. Add about $1200 to get it from NJ to OR and it's up to $40k.

The CarFax shows the same info as the dealer's picture of the speedometer. They had two prices advertised. $38,645 on autotrader and the price I showed above on the Certified Toyota Vehicles website. $40k shipped to me does seem a little high for a vehicle that is almost 5yrs old.

Kinda agree. Man...11K used. Wow!

Are you saying that with only 11k miles it is not too much $ or are they asking too much.

Well, I think it's too much. BUT, with 11K only....dang....that's like new. If I found a 2002 the same color as my 2001 with those miles I'd pay that amount because I could slap a new Cruiser under all my aftermarket color-matched crap.

Only 11K makes it more a personal choice. Tough call.

I know what you mean. It's made even tougher by it being in New Jersey and I am in Oregon.

That changes things. I'd not pay that. Snow, road salt, etc. Nope. That's just me though. Others might. I'm spoiled being rust-free in the SW USA.

I was worried about that also. Not much rust in Oregon unless you live on the coast or don't take care of your cars.

That would definitely scare me. I bought an '02 RX300 at the auction the other day that originally came from NJ (I'm in TX), and I was SHOCKED at the rust. I couldn't believe it. If you're shopping for an older vehicle, I would definitely only consider southern states.

Well that about does it for this one then. I would be buying it without seeing it and it just seems a little risky even if it is a Certified Used Toyota from a Toyota dealer.

I've met dealers that say eBay and other on-line sales are their avenue to reel in suckers with a pretty car. You gotta meet it in person.

Hay neighbor! I am in Eugene. I just bought my 04 10 days ago. Found it in the local paper at a great price so I jumped on it. Local car with all records documented. Before that I looked at about 10 LC/LX and I could tell which ones spent time in the NE. Underbody rust was easy to spot.

Keep looking and be patient. They are out there!
