Nice, AZ Redundant does a story about trash at Fossill Creek and notes that members of Friends of the Forest picked up 30 pounds of trash (vs our four truckloads). I'll give kudos to anyone trying to make a difference but the article makes no mention that the bulk of the volunteer trash removal projects have been carried out by two 4wd clubs. :bounce::bounce2:Good to see some balance. Maybe we should alert the press next time so people can see us evil 4 wheelers doing something positive:idea::cheers::cheers:.
There is a forum attached with a lot of hair brained feedback. Feel free to add your .02 if you are so inclined, the public needs to hear both sides of the story somehow.

Why didn't we contact someone to get some good publicity?
I guess it would be hard to find anyone with the press willing to say anything good about us rednecks and our gas guzzling, nasty pollution machines. 4wheelers are all going to burn in hell!!!

That's the point guys. 90% of the public never ventures off the beaten path and of the other 10% we are a small subculture. Therefore, when people read a one sided story, they get a distorted view. The only time a four wheeler gets press is when something bad happens or if we're accused of something. When playing the great American name game, its real easy to point a finger at a diffuse, faceless and nameless group of people. But when the group has a face, a name and a story, it take some real balls and you have to be prepared to back up your accusations. The best tool we have is positive influence, but if nobody sees it......

I've always said that responsible and irresponsible behavior is equal opportunity. I exists accross all segments of sociaty and arrives on every form of transportation known to man, including two feet. There are far to many factions that choose to play the blame game instead of finding real solutions. Maybe if we were more conspicuous, some of those fingers would be put away.

I agree Rob, so next time we do a cleanup somehow we need to get the press out there. Does anyone in the club have a connection?

We do have a "paper" guy, but don't know if he has contacts on the "journalism" side, any comment John?

Howdy! My co-driver :princess:left the story out for me to read when I got home this am. I think my contacts are a bit :censor:corroded. I tried to stir up some interest in our last cleanup, but got NO:flipoff2: response at all. I only work for the biggest :banana:newspaper in the country, but they are the biggest :banana::banana::banana:newspaper in the Valley, so who am I, :crybaby:anyway?? I will work on it :idea:when I get back to the factory tonight. Did anyone get a pic of the garbage that we collected? How about an estimate on how much :cool:we totaled? Should we include the tire that I trashed :mad:on the way up?? Anybody got contact info for Kat so our booty can be :grinpimp:verified? I will use a somewhat "greener" approach to stir up some interest. Maybe I should offer them a seat:lol: on the cleanup run at Chiva? John

For sure, if you don't want to deal with them, their welcome to ride with me.:D

Howdy! I wouldn't dare subject them to anything as crude:cool: as your Pink PantyMobile. :grinpimp:I'm sure ;)they would much sooner enjoy:eek: the luxuries of my :princess:Piggy!!! :flipoff2: John

There's another option::idea:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/aztalk/

I'm sure there are simular options at other newsites. Some people write articles on here that get posted on the regular news pages. This approach would not be subject to the whims of editors and advertisers. Some of the talk in there is a minefield of trolls and tards but some carefull maneuvering could lead to some productive discussions. I would say this, anything posted publically should be informative and positive. :bounce::bounce2:

There's enough people sniping and finger pointing :flipoff2:and too few solving problems.:grinpimp:

Come-on man, get serious! This is a good-news story. Newsies don't make any money on those! Their bread and butter is disaster and mayhem. Litter-collecting and good deeds do not pay reporters very well.

Maybe we could make up a story where two drunken fools run a quad off of a cliff. They land in the only tree in the area. Then they are rescued by a bunch of 4-wheelers posing as litter collecters. Their lives are saved in a dramatic rescue! Many regular people turn out and use limited resources to save their lives! They sacrifice all of the towels and blankets in camp. Among them, by pure luck, there happens to be a wilderness EMT! Who could have known? The hapless victims are delivered to the ambulance and then, lo and behold, the families of the victims are found! They are brought to the camp of the evil road-spoiling 4x4 rescuers and made welcome! The children in camp make s'mores for them and the adults offer them cool drinks. Then the evil 4x4 despoiling heros drive the families home in the dead of night across the dark wilderness! Now that is the stuff of news stories! It couldn't happen to any of us! Our lives are not so dramatic! We are just regular people!
Too bad that we could not make up a story like that for the news-hounds! We might have a story and get some attention. But that sort of thing only happens in fiction. It would not happen to any of us! We are just regular people. It's just too bad for us. Fiction is as fiction does. Truth is stranger! If we had a story like that we could tell it. But our horns are not for us to toot.

Start drinking a little early today Brian? ;)

I was reading a great novel that night. I wondered how they come up with such stuff! Adventure novels are filled with amazing situations. Creative writing tells of the opinion of the writer. I thought about my opinion.
Then I remembered the rescue adventure on the clean-up. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. No liquids were abused in the effort or execution of my thoughts on the matter. I may disparage some liquids on occasion, when used in the wrong context. If any liquids were offended, I offer my most sincere apologies!

Does that mean I only get a "B" on my paper Mr. Shotts?

Fossil has one L in it Rob.

The creek has 72* water at the springs.
Howdy! Looks to me like he does have one "L" in it,.......twice, like Shotts has one "T" in it,....twice! John

Are we having an online spelling test? I wasn't aware that anyone but myself was as anal about grammer online. We all get a bit sloppy on chat. It is OK!
Rob started this thread in an effort to promote the idea that some responsibility should be shown on forest roads. He may not have every point honed, but he is heading in the right direction!
The wilderness is not a park or a playground. We are on our own out there, that is why we go! Stupidity kills someone every day. This helps to clean up the gene pool. Nature is a tough master. But when idiots are hurt, others suffer, as we saw on the Fossil Creek weekend. The families of those fools were devastated, stranded, and scared. No man has a right to do that to his family.
We all have the right to be foolish. This is a free country. But when our foolishness begins to affect others, our personal rights end. We have an obligation to take care of our families. We must protect ourselves so that we can be there for them. They depend on us.
A man should have the right and ability to appreciate a beer, or a shot of rum or whiskey. God knows that I do it when I can. But when that puts his family or others at risk, he is wrong. That will not change.
