:meh:Ok, I did look but couldn't find anything and if it exists then feel free to flame away but direct me to the info first.

The head VW/Audi Mechanic at my dealer ship was a Toyota mechanic in the late '90s. He told me the 4.0L in the 80 was build by BMW and just put in by Toyota is this true and if so why would Toyota buy from BMW?:o

He's full of it.

The F engines are near direct copies of an old Chevy engine.

Another reason I don't goto dealerships....

probably why he's been demoted to Audis...? :D

So is the 4.5L motor built similarly to the 4.0, but with just a bigger displacement?

I suppose this is the origin of why they refer to it as a "tractor" motor.

No... The 1FZ (4.5) is DOHC (two cams in the head), while the 3FE (4.0) is OHV (cam is in the block, uses pushrods)

I wouldn't consider the 1FZ a tractor motor (it's not a pushrod motor), but it does have some serious grunt.

He does know a lot more about VW than Toyota... I told him I was looking for a TLC and knew he was a former Toyota mech. That is when he told me this and I wasn't sure as I know VW and Ford not Toyota. He had nothing good to say about the motor BUT he would love to have a TLC diesel I told him we all would.

Ah, nothing like dissing something when you are pulling facts out of your ass.

I read a thread awhile back refering to some of the third world cruisers being built with engines manufactured by VW with Toyata specs don't have specifics on which motor not sure for what country either it could be myth,if I am not mistaken the Bandaleir used a mercedes deisel could be wrong on that fact also.

I think that VW produced a Hilux under license from Toyota; called it a Taiga or something of that nature. :). Not for sure though.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere on MUD Toyota bought the blue prints for the original motor from GM back in the day. I don't know about the Audi motor thing but it doesn't seem like too big a stretch if Toyota didn't originally have the capability.

The biggest difference I think between the F/2F/3F and the 1FZ is that the F series had 4 main bearings, 1FZ has seven.

You can imagine the advantage in strength and less vibration.

Dan.

There isn't one part of the 1FZ that is the same or even simliar to the other F series motors. It's a completely new design from the ground up, designed entirely in house by Toyota of Japan, where as all the other F series were based on the original motor. The only thing Toyota did was keep the dimensions of the 1FZ the same as the 3F becaues the 1FZ was going in the same engine bays that the 3F occupied, including the 70 series models and 80 series models.

Toyota did allow VW to build the Taro under license in the 1990s. They were sold only in Europe. And made both 2WD, 4WD, IFS and solid axle trucks. You can tell your mechanic the real story is that VW couldn't figure out how to build trucks so they had to build Toyota copies and put VW badges on them.

Not to say that a 4 main bearing setup is weak...

7 is just stronger. :D

But to keep on topic, Brian hit the nail on the head.

The F engines are copies of an old Chevy design, whereas the 1FZ is Japanese-designed and built. Plus the 7 main bearings and DOHC.

I wonder if Mr. T has plans for a 2FZ...

And tell your VW mechanic that the new "VW Minivan" Brooke Shields has been shilling is just a POS Dodge Caravan with a snappy badge. Toyota has had pretty serious engine building and designing capability lo these 50 years, so no badge engineering here...
