Any post mod thoughts or helpful hints? Pictures? Are you happy with the swap?

I am contemplating it just to squeek as much power out of the stock motor...I notice my fan clutch engages quite a bit and not sure if this is normal. But is seems to rob the engine of some power that I could use for pulling a trailer...Thanks.

I detailed my fan conversion in my FJ-62 in thread https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.p...&highlight=fan starting with post #10. I used a new OEM Ford contour dual fan and Delta Current Control controller for variable (temperature based) fan speed control.

I didn't have a lot of time with the conversion before I took the truck down for an engine rebuild (engine went back in last week should be done soon). As part of the rebuild I upgraded to a Ron Davis aluminum radiator for additional cooling.

This isn't going to free up much horsepower. Although I did notice some gain (highway speeds going up long moderate grades) I'm not sure that I would make the switch for this reason alone. I run a 180 degree tstat and was looking for more consistent cooling with less of a min/max range. However if you really are looking for every little bit then this might be worth it to you... only way to know is to try it :)

edit: Don't forget that you'll probably need an alternator upgrade to handle a fan like this at full speed (30-35 amps). I was running a Mechman, I'm switching to a custom built NW Power Products in a stock case. Both hot rated at 175 amps with smaller than stock pulleys for better idle output. Also dual yellow top batteries with 1/0 cables.

Thanks Joel - I'll check it out....

Hijack - Moby, don't forget to update the other thread when you are back on the road. Thanks! - Hijack over

I'll have a big update once I'm back up and running - the truck has been down since Feb, I'm really ready to get it back :)

Maybe I missed it on your other posts, but which model number controller did you use?

Thanks,
ML

I used the 35 amp version. There also a 50 amp but per DCC the 35 amp version will drive a Contour or MarkVIII fan without any problems (i.e. going to the 50 amp version will not return more durability or longevity of the unit). The 35 amp unit is what they use in their integrated setups.

I just ordered the controller & filter earlier today. Moby, I might be hitting you up with questions when I start istalling the fan...

I can't see the point in this mod, drawing 35amps is a ton on a 60(40-55amp alt) or 62(80 amp alt)

fix the fan clutch.....or whatever is wrong.

a proper running Cruiser will not have much temp range, 170-205.......if its over that, there is another problem

Im still trying to figure out why you're trying to go to a Contour fan...I mean, are you trying to add Ford parts to your Toyota now that Ford got a higher initial reliability score?
I'd get a flex a lite trimline fan, and a Painless Wiring auto switch and be done with it...
What am I missing?

If that set up works for you you're not missing anything :) In general I don't think that any electric fan swap is worth it for most people. However if you're going to do a fan swap I think that the right fan and controller is totally dependent on what the end goals are and that varies by person. That setup would not meet my end goals but that doesn't mean that it wouldn't work for others.

My goals:
  1. Variable speed controller with adjustable temperature setting to better match the cooling fan action with my 180 degree t-stat. This was the basis for my conversion. Freeing up power was a distant second.
  2. Given the hot climate driving that my truck sees I wanted the highest cfm possible from a fan that completely covered the radiator. I would actually like more than the 3400 cfm that the Contour provides but this was the best fit vs. cfm that I could find. I also went with a Ron Davis aluminum radiator.
  3. Excellent durability/reliability of the entire system. I felt better going with an OEM fan, DCC publishes the average lifespan of the components in their controllers, I use PIDG terminals for all electrical connections, the dual fans offer some degree of redundency and I will add a manual on/off/auto override switch.
