197 000 miles...

I was hearing a Knock coming from the front cover for a while now but decided not to investigate further.I already spend so much with maintenance and mods. Rear diff lock actuator replaced , tail gate repainted front k-mar bumper etc...Took my truck to Boston 2 weeks ago and on my way back the CEL light turned on. I stopped to a local auto zone to have the codes pulled out. Turned out to be a camshaft position sensor and low fuel bank 1 codes. I took my truck to my mechanic to have it checked and he gave this diagnostic that i was doubting.

He said that my timming chain was loose and that my upper intake was full of carbon and would need a major gasket job.
I gave him the go-ahead to proceed with the front cover and oïl pans removal (to replace the timing chain you need to take off oïl pans !) When he was done he showed me that the crankshaft gear was missing 3 chinks ! He then explain that most timing chains as per fsm should be replaced after 300 000k or 190 000m

Running my rig with a loose timing chain could explain the broken gear he said.

So i guess i was Lucky to get to my place when driven back from Boston. While he's at it should he replace the head gasket ?????

Bear with me my first langage is not English so i appologize for any spelling mistakes.

Well then. I think I was one of the guys who doubted it was the chain. :whoops:

Glad you got it sorted out.

As for the HG, that's a tough one. If you really trust your mechanic, might be worth going through with it.

Timing chains aren't indestructable, but they aren't a routine maintenence item like belts.

how was the timing chain tensors ? were they worn out / broken ?
That will let it chew the teeth off in a quick hurry

If you replace the head gasket only use an OEM one, unless you like doing it over again in a few months.
