Ok...this is a really stupid question. But i have looked high and low and cant find the pics im looking for. Im looking to buy a supertop from Bestop for my 40, but i would like to see how it looks when the top is folded down (with canvas in place, not the bars folded with no canvas). Also does it really blow around when its folded?

I had a bestop. I never once folded it down with the vinyl top on the bars. It's not like a newer Jeep where you undo the top at the windshield and flip it back onto the bars. On the 40, you need to undo all the snaps around the tub and in order to get it out of the windshield channel. At that point it is pretty much off the truck. I usually just tossed it in the garage instead if trying to fold it up.

I know you want to see what it looks like.....I can't help, but, I can see where you might want to peel it back, make a couple hour drive to the beach (or whatever) and be able to roll it back on if weather gets bad......

I think if folded back with some forethought it would be fine at highway speed.....The straps that wrap around the folded top and secure under the beltrail hold very nicely on my "other" vehicle.....The bestop supertop on my Jeep is crazy close to the supertop on my 40 and its been folded down and secured nicely.....

The problem I see coming is with my supertop on my 40 being new - Its so nice, clean, and scratch free - and I'd be afraid to fold it down....not to mention what I'll do with it after I take it off......

Not that I have OCD or anything.......lol

I know that, i was wondering if it folded down like a TJ top or the supertop for the TJ, where you pull it out of its channels, disconnect from the windsheild and the fold it back. the top on my fiances jeep (oem) doesnt sit down great and i was wondering if the same is true of the bestop top for the FJ. I want to fold it for wheeling/trips to sunny places incase it rains. The 40 may be a toy to me but i like to keep my toys atleast somewhat clean.

Agree with Ocdbeetle about the folding and driving. It could be done and I may give it a try. Mine gets folded into a box in the back or more often left at home.

Yup, that is the same for a 40 supertop. Remove it from the channels and pull back. I haven't rolled my top down in fear of creasing the windows. I rolled the sides up once for a weekend trip to the coast and found that the way the top wraps around the back, it is very hard for me to roll up the sides without kinking the windows. I came out with a few light creases in the windows. Sorry...no pics of a folded top here :)

I can get mine to fold up to about 2.5' square but I need to have a bag made for it so I can put it in back and take it with me to where it won't get stomped on and dirty.

I'll run it by the upholsterer who did my seats and get a price.

I don't really think they are made to do that like the Jeeps are. At least with my kayline, you really could not just "fold it back", it would be a big mess.

When i talked to bestop they said it folds just like their jeep tops, but they didnt have any photos of it.

blueegg-thanks thats what i was looking for

The Bestop can be folded down toward the rear as shown in the eBay photo. In fact SOR used to sell a zippered boot that covered and protected the folded top along with the rear bows (kind of like a zippered sausage casing.)

I tried folding my Bestop that way for the first year or so that I had it, and securing it with rope and/or bungees - Pics here, post 96: https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/252729-fj40-pics-back-day-70s-80s-4.html

I quickly discovered it is faster, easier, and less damage is done to the plastic windows by just taking the top completely off (I fold it forward onto the hood), folding it in quarters, and tossing it in the back. Been doing it that way for nearly 20 years now through 3 or 4 different Bestops.

I have driven my Cruiser around every summer with the top folded back. There has been a couple times that I've been glad I had it with me. It sucks to put the top up in the rain but it is better than all your stuff getting wet.

When I fold it up, first I unzip the sides and the back and flip them on top then I undo the windshield channel. Then I fold the front over the back and sort of just roll it up. I pay carful attention to the windows while I do this. I sort of slide it between the jump seats and the back doors. I let the bars down and put them on top of the soft top. I'll then throw some bungie cords around the bars to hold them down on the top so it will stay in place. It can be a little hard on the top for it to stay folded up in the back of the rig but if your careful its not too bad.

I have driven 60 mph and even pulled a camp trailer with the top down like this with no problems.

Here are some pics.
