I am currently preparing my vehicle for extended overlanding trips and is looking at which fluids to carry. In order the lighten the load and maximize the amout of space I have, I was wondering if tranny fluid can be used in the diffs?

The tranny fluids for my vehicle is specified to be 75w-90. Diff fluid is 80w-90. I aleady have the tranny fluid and is wondering if one can use the 75w-90 in the diff in the case of an emergency. Bear in mind that one might have to drive as far as 1000 to 2000km before been able to fit the correct fluid.

thanks

manual trannies, t-cases, and differentials can run identical fluids with no problems. I have for many many many years in the FJ40.

Heck, I'd be surprised if you can track down the EXACT fluid specs anymore....within reason, gear oil is gear oil (unless you pimp for synth)

Excellent. With 3l tranny fluid I can thus address an oil change on the front, rear, gearbox and t-box as long as it is not all at once. ;)

As long as the fluids have the correct additives and ratings. For instance, some manual trannies have bronze parts in them that cannot handle GL5 (can't recall why). Also, I don't know what diffs you have but obviously if they're a limited slip you'll need to carry a small bottle of the additive in the event you need to fill them in the bush.

Sounds like a fun trip, and an excellent rig (jealous).

You make a good point. The oil I am using is GL4 so no worries. No LSD for me, no thanks. I want to lock them up the one and only way (no offence meant to the LSD boys) My vehicle is very similair to your 80 series but with factory lockers front and rear.

Mine are both factory locked front and rear - heh.....

The 80 series specs are still a tad confusing. The 80 series in ZA seems to have several differences. For one, no lockers and carby only.

I wonder if they run carby's is for ease of fix in the bush? You would have to have a laptop and special tools to fix fuel injection in the bush with lions watching.

Yes Bongani, the SA spec GX is a carby, has no lockers and is part time 4wd, like mine! Then we also have the GXL, permanent 4wd, with rear LSD and the VX with factory lockers, but there are also VX's with no lockers. Really confusing, even received a threatening mail after mentioning that all VX's have factory lockers!

Zanthus ;)
