Flaring is driving me crazy!

Don't bother changing the fluid first - it will have a minimal or zero effect on this, but continuing to let it flare will wear out the fluid and clutches. Flaring is a term used to describe a fire increasing in intensity and is used in some circles to describe the engine RPM increasing between shifts before dropping rather than simply dropping. The tranny gets its throttle setting info from the cable to determine how fast to close the clutches. Hers 'thinks' the throttle is at a milder setting and is gently closing the clutches. Shortening the cable will make the tranny 'think' she's heavier into the throttle at the shift and properly close the clutches faster to reduce that slippage.

Hello Sara:
I do know that I reccommended to Nick a long time ago to switch out the Valve body on that trannie. I do remember saying to christo that the tranny was the weak link in that truck. I do not know what was passed on to you in the report. So that said, I would reccommend for you to get a hold of rodney in Oz( link posted by Rich) and talk to him. The flareing is to the point that you may have to either rebuild the tranny or you may be able to get away with a extreme valve body from Rodney. I am not affliated with rodney in any way at this time. I have help install one valve body and seen the results of his work. It was wonderful on the truck that it was installed in. Now I am not saying that this valve body will work for you as the slipping in the tranny may be too great and you may have to either rebuild the tranny or have it replaced with a used one or a rebuilt.
I do beleive that the cable has been adjust many times on this truck with no effect. and you will also notice that as you increase the boost on the turbo the flare gets worse. This to me would indicate that either the valve passege is clogged or not allowing enough pressure to clamp the clutches properly. Also if this is not taken care of soon it will degrade in to a rebuild of some sort. Talk (via phone or e-mail) to rodney and see what his thoughts are. later robbie

Mine was flaring do to the throttle cable being out of it's housing mount entirely. Someone replaced the rubber intake boot because it was cracked and moved that cable out of the way and never hooked it back up. I put it back again and about all the flaring went away. Then I adjusted my cable and that helped a lot. Now it does it minimally, but, it's not bad enough anymore that I will do anything about it at this point..

Mama,

Disregard my advice and go with Robbie's as it sounds like he's familiar with the truck. That's a great and stout tranny, but it can be damaged by continued operation with a part in need of attention.

Thank you Robbie! Should have known just by signature you would know the rig. I need to call you and talk a little about boost. Have a few minor questions. Will be in touch thanks again. Wish there was a SLEEOFFROAD on the east coast.

http://www.automatictransmission.com.au is Rodney's website. He is an Australian transmission rebuilder. He loves to jabber about transmissions and is glad to provide remote diagnosis and repair info via email.

He is quite familiar with Land Cruiser transmissions, and is not at all difficult to work with.

I think that his valve body is like $700.00

Now is that Australian Dollars or US Dollars? ;)

There around 700 USD for the 440 non electronic versions. As for the later 442 I do not know. Nick did most of his own work and installed the turbo, and the electronics on his truck. I do not really know that much about the Blitz controller. Hopefully he included the directions on this unit to help you. He has been around Christo for many years and has been a capable person to wheel with. He always tried his best to do the work to the best standards he could. In the right hands that truck has some potiential, but it will take some money and time to get it all straighten out. good luck. later robbie

There was also something about another $400 until your old unit was received back in AU.

For $200 you can get a bullet proof 700 RWHP Factory Tech Valve Body for a different style non-Toyota truck that is built and designed by the tranny inventor, so where ever they came up with a price like that....well never mind.

For $1100 there better be something like an Asian wife and a valve body involved in the transaction.

Here's the response that I got back.

In response to your question : I'm interested in your transmission valve body for a 1993 toyota land cruiser.

What would the price be in US $$$ and exactly what do I receive?

Maybe a link would work for this question.

My answer is : You would have the A442F and the Cost would be Approx $667 U.S delivered to your door by Air mail direct 4-5 days. You would also need to return your old valve body to Pomona C.A at your own cost where we would return it back to Australia at my own cost. http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=4651
You get the Extreme Valve Body, New Filter, New Filter Gasket, New Pan Gasket, Instructions and Aluminium Dowell. I would also highly recommend the Complete Temp Gauge kit for $160U.S is sent at the same time. http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=12031 You would also be able to fit the Lock-Up Manual control Kit if the Extreme Valve Body is fitted http://www.automatictransmission.com.au/release.asp?NewsId=12101 $138 U.S if ordered at the same time.

Hey Lurker, thanks for finding out what is needed from Rodney. Soooo....roughly $1000 bucks to do trick? We talked to Robbie who is famiiar with our truck and decided to wait a bit.....we did some adjusting and the flaring is minimal....we do know that we will probably need to replace the tranny. Right now, we are looking into getting a Supra fuel injector for the turbo.

Thanks for all the responses and welcomes to the newbie's question. ;)
