Well, I got transferred to another shop down here in Scottsdale effective Tuesday. I can't / don't want to commute there daily (among other reasons) at my current pay rate - I've been getting ready to move to Flag full time and this advanced things up very heavily.

What is the 'entry level' job market like in Flagstaff? Am I going to have a hard time finding a decent job ($9.00/hr+ / 40 hours; Wow, what low standards :flipoff2: ) dealing with computers or the automotive field? It just seems like the place is mostly small business and I've read that pay is very low. I've got a year in college for engineering but I don't think I'll be going back soon given living expenses, tuition, etc.

Thanks. This sucks. Ah, the joys of moving out on your own. :frown: I should have left the 80 stock instead of killing the resale value.

i can offer my perspective as someone who also has looked into moving up there. it sounds like your single and moving from mom and dad? in that case i think your in a good position to do it. flag is a weird place, its strongly influenced by college and tourists so ALOT of jobs are service oriented, however alot of labor is up there to fill those jobs so wages stay down i think. flag is also a place where many above average income folks have moved to either with they're buisiness or semi retired or making money at home/telecommuting from the city they came from, so, housing has always seemed pretty high compared to the average working wage.

i come from a construction and industrial background and find that finances would be pretty tight if i moved up there (wife and two teenage kids) and a house for us will be twice as much as what we have here.

Purina is making a big addition to the plant up there and you might do well to look at what jobs will be available,,, they will be hiring alot of new people.

W.L. Gore is up there as well...

That's where I work. There was a job fair a couple days ago too. What is your skill set? Training? go to gore.com and look at careers.

Dave

Skills set and training... hmm.
Well, I've got some experience with C / C++ / PHP, 8 years of Linux experience, I can build and trouble shoot computers with the very best, I'm pretty decent working with and repairing anything mechanical, and I pick things up very fast.

I dunno, I can pretty much do anything with vehicles and computers, I have no formal training though. :frown: I also can't do anything that requires a CDL (criminal speeding ticket). Thanks for the gore.com tip, I'll look around. It just seems like everything there is at a higher level than I am. I wish I was able to finish college. :frown:

RHINO, I've lived up here a year, and I'm back and forth every week. Very odd town in my opinion, and if I were single I wouldn't be moving to Flag. :flipoff2:

Howdy! Well, you can always try the freelance computer doctor thing. Just takes a gimmick or two to put some zing in your advertising. By the way, I have an old Dell Optiplex 150 that crapped out. My son thinks the BIOS died? Whatever. I suppose it's so old that it's not worth trying to fix. John

of course gore doesnt list facilities/machine maintenance categories. do you know if they have in house mechanics/maint guys?

Thats exactly what I do. I found my jod at Gore.com. I'm the "junior" assosiate on the maintenance team in my plant and I've been there 4 years. The next "senior" has 7 and then 22, 28, and 29, So not many people leave. We are opening a cluster off Happy Valley Road up by Desert Valley Auto Parts and I saw postings for there yesterday. If you are serious (anyone here) let me know, prepare a resume and I will see what I can do. Recommendations weigh heavily at Gore.

I work more with the machine design engineer group fabricating their ideas. I also do periodic preventative maintenance and calibrations on the manufacturing equipment as well as providing support for break downs.

Hey MoGas, what is the average low level incoming person looking like as far as qualifications? I'd really like a job there but I don't think I have the experience to be noticed.

I'm finally up here, and as you guys have said most of the jobs are customer service oriented. I'd rather get in to a bigger company with some room for advancement and if at all possible find a company that will fund education. I wish I hadn't dropped out. heh.

There are several entry level openings as manufacturing operators. All they really require is that you will "fit" which they will determine upon interview, and that you pass a hand dexterity test. they really like a proven attendence history too. Qualifications

Must be able to pass a hand evaluation.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent educational experience.
Demonstrated one year of consistent work experience (full-time 36-40hrs a week).
Must be able to work in a clean-room environment and wear clean-room garments. Demonstrated good verbal and written English skills.
