I just purchased a '91 FJ-80 with a used engine in it from cruizerparts.net. I am unable to get the timing set right. I have read through searching that FJ62's used a different flexplate that fj80's with 3fe's in them. I have the original motor and the distributor will drop into it just fine. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in the flexplates and if there is can I simply switch them around? Here are the engine serial numbers 3f0299780 and 3f031116. Does anyone know how to tell if the first engine number is from a fj62 or an fj80?

Don't know, but put this in the 60 series forum too.

Good luck,

Timing should be the same, same block same stupid window.

Are you sure the distributor is not a tooth more off? it will only go into the oil pump 2 ways but the engagement to the cam is many toothed and that is the one we are interested in, went through this on a 2F once (same setup) had to engage the cam correctly and then turn the motor over by hand to get the oil pump lined up and drop the rest of the way in.

I am Sure I am setting the distributor in right. I have try it more times than I remember. It simply does not drop in the same as the old motor. The flexplate on the old motor has white marks on it about every 15 degrees and the new motors flex plate only has the 2 small drill marks and the one large drill mark. I still think the flexplate is the problem.

How far off on the timing are you? High or low? In my experience I've found that getting the distributor to hit the correct tooth and having the oil pump aligned exactly right to be tricky. But then again I've only had to do this on one engine (but maybe half-a-dozen times). The FSM is very helpful in showing how the oil pump and rotor should be oriented when stabbing in the distributor.

The timing is retarded to much and there is not enough adjustment in the distributor. I have the FSM and have dropped the distributor in according to the directions multiple times and it is off. I am starting to think that the timing chain/belt is not installed right or has slipped. Does anyone who if it is common for the timing chain to slip on the cam gear?

You are correct, I realized that after I did a little more reading. Doh! I have read through searching that if the valves are not adjusted right it can effect the timing, is this true and how much can it through the timing off?

No chain, gears on 3FE. Adjustment of the valve lash does not affect the timing but can affect performance.

You may have already done this, but verify that your piston in the # 1 cylinder is at top dead center (tdc); after the timing mark is aligned to zero on the window, take out the #1 spark plug and feel for the piston in the top of the #1 bore with your pinky. This will ensure you do not have any gear problems. Then if everything feels right, line up distributor and install.

Drive Plate & Ring Gear

08/88 - 06/89 FJ-62 Part # 32101-60010
06/89 - 01/90 FJ-62 Part # 32101-60011
01/90 - 08/92 FJ-80 Part # 32101-60011

The later FJ-62 drive plate is the same as the FJ-80 drive plate. I have both in my garage and I think the only difference between them is the bolt pattern to the crank. If you want I can check but I have to pull the FJ-80 plate. I also think that you are off a tooth, as long as the rotor points to the #1 spark plug wire on the cap, you are on compression TDC, and the oil pump slit line up after the rotor twists while sliding in. Good luck.

Dude,

Listen to Andrew. He don't post here much lately, but he know what's what.

Good luck,

Was this 80 on ebay? I saw one in PA on ebay a few months back that had a replacement engine that went with it. Guy seemed to relist b/c the proce asnt going high enough and made some lame excuse.

I finally got the distributor to drop in right. I had to drop it in and then have someone put slight pressure on it while I rolled the motor over a little bit for it to settle in the rest of the way. I then rolled the motor back and finally everything was right. What a relief I was about ready to pull my hair out over a simply task of timing a engine. Anyway thanks for the help everyone!!

This 80 was on ebay but it is in South Dakota. I called the guy and went to take a look at it and bought it. I stole it for 2850.00. No rust, interior is perfect and I got the old 3f and fuel injection system that was in it originally. Just have some hail damage to fix!!

Thanks again for the posts!

A bad or poorly adjusted TPS, throttle position sensor, will make a 3FE engine impossible to time correctly.
