I am looking for an FJ80 to build and I want to make sure I get a FF rear axle. I have been searching Ebay and Craigslist for an 80 and the appearance of the rear wheels leads me to believe the axles are semi-float. Does the 80 FF not protrude through the rear rim? Asking sellers if a vehicle has a full float rear axle would get me nowhere. What years and option levels had the FF and are there any exterior visual clues as to what rear is under the rig. Will my rear third member from my 40 drop into a FF 80 housing? Thanks people. Joe B

91-92 FJ80 come with 3FE motors and SF rear axles.

93-97 come with 1FZ motors and FF rear axles. Although some rare 93-94 models came with the FF rear axles.

YES you can put your 9.5 3rd into any rear axle from 91-97 non-locked from factory.

Thanks

Another clue in is to ask are if the rig has drum brakes in the rear, that means SF... at least on the 93-94.

An easier question might be on the 93-94.. does it have ABS? If so.. FF and disc. If not... SF and drums. - actualy I might be wrong there.. I suppose there could be a disc 93-94 w/o ABS.

Thanks again. I am still debating building an 80 with my 40 parts or linking the 40 with an 80 FF rear. I think the 80 is the best looking 4 door Cruiser out there and having all that luxury around me would be really nice. Rear 80 FF in the 40 would be a much cheaper option but the 80 is calling me like moth to flame.

You have to remove the centre cap from the rim, the FF hub is underneath. Some remove the centre cap because it's plastic and the paint fades, others because having the hub poke through the centre of the wheel just looks cool!

Stick the with the model year advice posted above, you'll find one, essentially '93 and up with disc brakes.

I know that the 80 FF axle complete can be installed in a 40 (with modification, remember the 80 series is coil sprung), I'm sure someone's done it here on 'Mud, but they are significantly wider. If I recall the 60 series axles are 3" wider than a 40 series axles. An 80 series axles are wider still.

If you're buying a truck for a full float rear axle then if I were you I'd buy a FJ45 full float rear, that's the correct width for your 40. Or do what I did, buy an 80 series, keep the 40 series and buy a 45 rear axle for the 40! :)

91 and 92 non US models some have FF rear, like mine.

I love this site. Always great replies. I have had a couple of Mud members contact me with axles for sale. My rear frame is rotten and I sourced a good frame for free and I think I will link the rear and use coil springs. My front axle now is a FJ60 streched 3"s so a FJ80 rear would compliment the front rather well. If there are more axles out there please reply. Thanks.

When you extended your fj60 front axle what did you use for the burfields? As well as extension sleeves?

The member you quoted hasn't been on 'MUD for several years, so don't necessarily expect them to respond.

The birfs wouldn't be affected by the axle width change so stock or aftermarket replacements would be fine. The inner axle shafts would however need to be ordered in a custom length from an aftermarket axle builder.

As far as extending the housing itself there are a few ways to do it, but it's likely been cut on each side, sleeved internally and (hopefully) externally with DOM tubing and plate steel. I really doubt that there are any pre-made kits or sleeves to accomplish this.

Talk to Dave Gore at 4+Parts. He does a lot of these axle stretch jobs.
