Hello, I'm new to the forum and I'm currently searching for a 94-97 FJ80 in the NY/NJ area. Stock, built...whatever. will most likely build it up myself. Also, looking to see if there might be another member in Minnesota who could check out a 94 listed on autotrader...looks nice Thx Brendan

Grr, wouldnt let me send you a PM.

So here it goes.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-t...6-1995-white-land-cruiser-mn.html#post5317573

This is my '95, I unfortunatly need to sell. The Cruiser and I also live in Minnesota. So if I had some spare time i wouldnt mind checking out the other one, but i think you might find a better candidate here, somone with more tech knowledge, and doesnt already have one for sale. :p

Good luck!
Any questions please email me at wjkattner@hotmail.com
Happy to exchange phone numbers through email if you would like to talk!

If it helps, my brother has his '96 FZJ80 for sale now, it's currently located in Baltimore MD. I'm begging him to send me some pics so I can post it on here. He's asking $5K, it has about 120K on it now, and yes it does have lockers.

KLF,
Thx for the reply. Can you give me some more info on the truck, color, interior, etc? The mileage/price is right about where i want to be. Are there any add ons? Any issues you know of? I am interested. Thx

Here's what I do know (I haven't spent much time with the truck):

Color is dark blue (only one I've ever seen this color), I think the interior is gray. Mechanically it runs very well, no issues that I'm aware of. It was involved in a minor accident about 3 years ago, and the entire front axle was replaced. He's had it off-road a few times, nothing major, but it does have some trail scars, I think a couple of the flares got ripped off. Interior is fair, mostly dirty I think. He did put a kickin' stereo in it, most of which he is keeping, but he did say there is some negotiating room on the speakers. Other than that, it's totally stock.

A couple weeks ago some punk slashed two tires, so they got replaced with brand new ones, I can't remember the brand, but not Pep Boys cheapos. There is a minor exhaust leak now that he is going to repair this weekend. The only other issue I'm aware of is there's something wrong with the temp control in the dash for the heater, if you don't put the slide in just the right position the heat shuts off entirely. He's tried several times on here to get a replacement from trucks being parted out but was never successful, although he doesn't get on here much.

Like I said, I'm pestering him to get me some photos, I actually called him again last night to remind him. I'll put up a separate thread when I do, with more details.

Hey, Thx for the info. Ideally, I am looking for a white, tan or black 80 that hasn't seen trail time as it will be an occassional commuter/beach truck. I appreciate the look, but I think it may be a better fit for me to pay up for a cleaner truck. You bro's truck sounds like a great trail rig. I'm just headed in another direction. Thx anyway.

BCNJ, I don't want to hijack your thread as I'm another newcomer to the forum on the East Coast (Northern VA) looking for an 80 but will consider a 100 series.

Since you've had first right of refusal on KLF's brothers offering, I'd be interested in taking a look at it. I'll contact KLF directly via PM so we don't step all over your thread. I'm hesitant since I too prefer to start with a clean mall cruiser and then build it up, but if corrosion isn't an issue and it's mechanically sound with maintenance generally up to speed, it's still in consideration. I strongly avoid black vehicles so dark blue might be a non starter too and I can wait for you to find a nice black one as my preference is toward white, two tone pearl over gray, silver, etc.

Good luck in your search too.

Best,

Brad

Hi Brad. Thx for the consideration. I officially pass on the dark blue 80;) Fortunately this will be a third car for me, so I can take my time to find the right one. There is an interesting LX 450 in Fairfax, VA that the guy is asking 8900, but would take 8400. I'm partial to The "Landcruiser" badging on back so it's out of the running for me, but it is champagne. Good luck and let me know what you settle on.

Best,

Brendan

Brendan,

Howdy, and you're welcome. This would be a 4th car for me so I'm moving slow too but pricing on the lower end of the spectrum is much easier to pass by the "Domestic Financial Ministry" but then if it's rough looking that raises another flag and issue that needs to be adjudicated by the Queen. After 24 years I pick my battles...!

I'm with you on finding the right one; and appreciate the info on the LX 450. I saw one that sounds the same listed on Craigslist (same price, location and color) and I took a look at it. White smoke like a fiend coming out of the ass end even after warm up, so that sends a headgasket isse signal to me, and there is uneven lubrication on the front axle; one side dang near dripping and the other rusting up. One odd tire in the mix, etc. Otherwise unremarkable looking and I too prefer the LC over the LX but if the specs and price are right I'm there. Spring is coming and gas prices are rising so the supply should hopefully start flowing again.

Best,

Brad

Ha, I didn't even notice the smoke! I guess it sneaks in on the one pic. Good looking out. I'm only 5 yrs in with the wife so we're still in the "as long as she's happy, I get what I want" phase. I noticed the odd wheel, but was planning on swapping out the stock wheels on anything i purchase so it wasn't a deal breaker for me. I'm a year removed from selling me '95 SWB Rangie that was "Mall expedition built", so I will welcome the relatively low maintenance costs on a LC. I'll give you a shout if I come across anything exciting.

I like your "as long as she's happy stage.." That worked pretty well for a long time in the BK (Before Kids) days.

On the Fairfax LX I suspect it's the same vehicle; it's at a small independent dealer and they also have a LX 470 which is in better shape but close to $20K. I fired the LX 450 up, saw the exhaust, left it running for 10 minutes, shut it off and took the keys back without having driven it. HG isn't the most extensive or expensive repair, but I hate to start with it or a front axle rebuild, etc. I'd prefer to keep the expenses directed to a build vice repairs that I inherited. If it's a known issue and factored into the price then you have maneuver room.

I'll likewise keep you in the loop if I find a nice black one like the Florida 80 that showed up yesterday. Very clean and desireable, but my track record of vehicle cosmetic care doesn't support black or other very dark vehicles. Branch pinstriping shows up readily on the Black, Green and Gray too.

Thx, I appreciate it. I actually tried to buy the black FL 80 this AM! Already spoken for pending wire transfer. Apparently you've got to be quick on these. There's an identical one up here in Irvington for more $$ and not as clean. A friend and veteran LC guy checked it out last week and passed, saying it's, "way too high" for the condition.

Yep good one's don't last long; I've missed a couple already. Now I have the pre-approval from the bride and the bank so I can move quicker. Prices should come down (hopefully) as a consequece of gas prices driving up and more rigs on the market by folks who used them as primary or backup daily drivers.

I hope so. I don't even mind the price point as long as it's clean, rust free, no HG issues and is not ridiculous $. The itch is growing!

Hey Tripper. I waved in a stock White '96 with 125k on the clock on Fri. Thx for the look. I'll post some pics in the 80 tech forum when it gets up to NJ from FL on Mon. Thx for all the replies guys. Good luck PFDD!

Congrats and thanks! spent a butt numbing day driving up to Syracuse to look at the "beautiful 94 toyota landcruiser, 77k miles, leather, excellent cond - $7250". To be kind I'll just say the exterior was well cared for but the interior was a complete mismatch to the exterior, trashed dirty, stained, both seat moters gone, radio gone (he did have two others to try) 2 side window motors gone, seats torn etc. Can't quite understand how the interior was so completedly different from the exterior unless it was flooded. The capper was that it had had a repaint on the hood, both front fenders, etc. so I'm figuring accident. I didn't pull a Carfax but no need, I'd have never tried to get that past the domestic review committee. On the plus side the engine did seems solid it may indeed have had only 77K miles.

The hunt continues. Congrats again on yours.

Thx PFDD. It"s funny how similar these experiences are. When I sell a car, I make sure it's clean at the very least. If it needs a detailing, it gets one. Keep searching!

Thanks. In fairness to the seller, he did discose that at least one window was out of the track and he's supposedly pushed it back in, but it wouldn't go up at all. He did mention that he'd procured two OEM radios to try as replacements and he did also mention that for sure the driver's side motor was out too. That said it was in "excellent condition, in need of nothing" doesn't match my expectations at all with the level of grime, rust and wear apparent inside, oh and the CEL was lit too. The fact that they had purchased the vehicle from ebay a year ago and knew nothing of it's history and disavowed any knowledge of any accident was the killer when it was obvious that it had been repainted.

My enthusiasm for an extremely low mileage example in supposedly excellent shape caused to me move quicker than I should have in asking more critical questions, asking for more interior photos and trying to get a Carfax report first. Fourteen hours driving in the rain was the price of my lack of preparation and stupidity. I think I've learned a few valuable lessons here.

I detail my vehicles too and sold an 1987 Pathfinder a couple of years ago that looked orders of magnitude better in terms of care and pride of ownership. I don't expect surgically clean, but at least blow the crap out with a leaf blower and get your junk out of it, perhaps even go so far as to clean it...! Things that can be detailed away I overlook, but the level of interior rust stains, apparent bleach stains and discoloration of surfaces, cracks, holes, etc. don't wipe away and started me questioning if it had been flooded inside especially with both seat motors rusted and crapped out.

Very frustrating.

I've considered stopping the active search and just purchasing a new Trail edition 4Runner. I didn't want to spend the money for a new vehicle, but so far the best condition 80 series I've seen had 170-180K in mileage which is a lot of use and potential maintenance. I'm not going to hard wheel or rock crawl it, just family mild expo and trail rides no death-cheating or camel trophy events so even my Sequoia that just rolled over to 61K mileage looks like it might do the trick with a few mods. Iron Pig is only about 50 miles away and could certainly do the work. Problem is that mods to the Sequoia that can't be carried over from the Tundra are custom propositions, and it's pretty big for tight East Coast trails. A 80 is still desirable for me.

Anyway congrats again on your new rig. Hope it's all that you were looking for. If you see something, and have a mind, drop a note.

Best,

Brad (AKA PFDD (Para Frog Devil Dog))
