Thanks. In fairness to the seller, he did discose that at least one window was out of the track and he's supposedly pushed it back in, but it wouldn't go up at all. He did mention that he'd procured two OEM radios to try as replacements and he did also mention that for sure the driver's side motor was out too. That said it was in "excellent condition, in need of nothing" doesn't match my expectations at all with the level of grime, rust and wear apparent inside, oh and the CEL was lit too. The fact that they had purchased the vehicle from ebay a year ago and knew nothing of it's history and disavowed any knowledge of any accident was the killer when it was obvious that it had been repainted.
My enthusiasm for an extremely low mileage example in supposedly excellent shape caused to me move quicker than I should have in asking more critical questions, asking for more interior photos and trying to get a Carfax report first. Fourteen hours driving in the rain was the price of my lack of preparation and stupidity. I think I've learned a few valuable lessons here.
I detail my vehicles too and sold an 1987 Pathfinder a couple of years ago that looked orders of magnitude better in terms of care and pride of ownership. I don't expect surgically clean, but at least blow the crap out with a leaf blower and get your junk out of it, perhaps even go so far as to clean it...! Things that can be detailed away I overlook, but the level of interior rust stains, apparent bleach stains and discoloration of surfaces, cracks, holes, etc. don't wipe away and started me questioning if it had been flooded inside especially with both seat motors rusted and crapped out.
Very frustrating.
I've considered stopping the active search and just purchasing a new Trail edition 4Runner. I didn't want to spend the money for a new vehicle, but so far the best condition 80 series I've seen had 170-180K in mileage which is a lot of use and potential maintenance. I'm not going to hard wheel or rock crawl it, just family mild expo and trail rides no death-cheating or camel trophy events so even my Sequoia that just rolled over to 61K mileage looks like it might do the trick with a few mods. Iron Pig is only about 50 miles away and could certainly do the work. Problem is that mods to the Sequoia that can't be carried over from the Tundra are custom propositions, and it's pretty big for tight East Coast trails. A 80 is still desirable for me.
Anyway congrats again on your new rig. Hope it's all that you were looking for. If you see something, and have a mind, drop a note.
Best,
Brad (AKA PFDD (Para Frog Devil Dog))
