Hi everyone,
It appears I have a bad torque converter after doing some crude tests. After searching the forums here, I want to reach out to the experts…
Can someone please provide me with a part number and or a reputable distributor for a stock torque converter for my ‘92 Land Cruiser? I don’t see many online companies that sell this item and I don’t want to order the wrong part with a misinformed phone operator trying to make a sale. Thanks in advance!
Side note:
I also want to flush the transmission in case any loose material/metal shavings got inside. Does anyone have the step by step procedure for this specific transmission?

There is a procedure it's called Rodney flush should be on the 60 forum in the faq section. As far as the torque converter goes I can't help.

Torque converters are rebuilt by Torque converter rebuilders. They cut them open, clean them, machine the old clutch frictions off, bond new ones on, put new seals in the lockup piston and Weld it back together in a specialized machine.

When a converter fails it usually damages the transmission. Depends how it failed.

Normally you would rebuild transmission and converter at the same time.

yes, I understand 100%. I'm preying that I stopped driving the truck soon enough before causing irreversible damage to the transmission. ill swap out the TC and then I'll know whether or not I need to have a shop rebuild the tranny. thanks so much!

You said that you did tests. I asked what tests you did. You didn't answer. I'll ask again.

Just observed symptoms while driving and did a basic “shudder test”.
Not accelerating, transmission not shifting into second, sluggish when trying to accelerate in first gear.
Shuddering and noises stops after lifting off the throttle while doing brake stand.
Last test I haven NOT done yet is checking the fluid for metal shavings.

What is the maintenance history of the vehicle?

Don’t have much history. My co worker purchased it and it sat for a couple years. It was owned by a son father combo who before him who seemingly just put on a bumper winch combo and a roof rack. Drivetrain appears to be completely stock. It has 200K miles on vehicle. Engine runs great and I was daily driving truck before this new noise started. It has sat for a couple months now.
That’s all I got. Told ya not much info.
I have not done anything to the transmission since I purchased it two years ago. Just check fluids and do oil changes ect.

If you push the center diff lock button on the dash and do the same tests, do you get different results?
You should get a CDL lock light on the dash with the button pressed.

Haven’t tried that test. I’ll do that this evening when I get home. What exactly am I looking for? Same symptoms?

The A440F is an extremely robust transmission. Unless it has been severely neglected and abused, I find it hard to believe that there's an internal failure.
That said, locking the center diff removes the possibility of a different driveline failure that is more common on the 91/92 FJ80 that can exhibit similar symptoms.
Of course this assumes that the CDL actually works on this truck.
