My 1990 FJ62 is not starting! It has sat for 2 weeks, with the exception of last Saturday where it started fine, and I had a trickle charger on it for the last two days. This morning I tested both batteries, my Battery 1 was totally dead and unusable, Battery 2 was dead but still usable. After charging Battery 2 for a few hours, I tried stating the truck, it wouldn't start on either battery. I tried to jump it to go to the store to get a new battery, it wouldn't start with a jump either. Battery 1 was removed and brought to a shop and replaced. Battery 1 was installed, STILL NO START! At this point I should mention that interior electronics are working, and the engine doesn't turn over at all. The starter solenoid does click. We banged on the starter with a pipe, still no start. Connections on the starter look good.

I also noticed that the truck rolls (it's on a hill) when shifted to any gear besides "Park".

HELP

PS: starter is Mean Green, and 1 year old

If you started 'clicks', I would have to ASSUME it is pulling the contact disk to bridge battery power to the starter. By not turning the starter, then you either have a bad cable from the battery to the starter, or the disk in the started is bad, or perhaps the starter itself is frozen or gunked up.

Was just about to start another thread with the same post. I hope you don't mind me piggie backing on here.

I just failed to start my 62 five minutes ago. I drove it yesterday morning and I have plenty of battery, starter cranks like crazy, all interior electronics are working, I have gas. Nothing. Drove great yesterday. Any ideas?

hello guys. I have had the same mysterious issue with starting. i have changed nuetral switch, batt, starters, alt, and battery cables, been to electrical shops. cannot figure out what is. It just randomly happens. And im on the verge of rewiring the whole damn truck. so..... all the money and time i spent would have been better off spending on a total rewire to start with.

The discs on the solenoids of Toyota-style starters are famous for pitting and wearing out. It's almost guaranteed to be the cause if your starter clicks but doesn't do anything. (of course always check wiring and grounds before condemning starter)

Ok, my starter is just has some bad spots on it. I banged on it a few times with a pipe, and it started right up with a jump. It will be replaced tomorrow.

@lelandEOD I've got a similar issue. I turn the key and heard a small click and nothing. I have full power and fuel. I just changed the starter and I now turn the key and hear nothing. Where is the starter solenoid located? I'll also search for the neutral switch.

Wow! What a blast from the past when I knew nothing. Now I know just a bit more then nothing...

I just went through this on my 62. I thought it was the starter. But I could jump the starter direct with the key on and get it to start fine. I then read about putting a relay in to get better voltage to the solenoid . My problem turned out to be the contacts in my ignition switch which the relay would have cured also, But I had a spare ignition switch and put it in . It cured the problem.. for now.
When I would turn the ignition over to start there was a little delay sometimes before it would catch hold or not catch at all, that's why I started to look at the contacts in the ignition switch

I THINK I ended up having a dud starter from Mean Green in which they lost my business... after one lasting a year and the replacement not at all I’ll stick to cheapo stuff. I end up swamping them regardless.

Winter cold and moisture brings on several "seasonal" electrical demons for my 62. Good thing I've learned over the years the different solutions. o_O

Hey mate how do i test/bypass my neutral start switch?

Unplug the connector coming off the neutral safety switch that has the black/red wire and black/white wire, and jump those on the body-side of the harness. This is will allow the key to send power to the starter solenoid at any time.

To test the NSS use a multimeter and check for continuity on those same wires on the NSS while in park and neutral
