Hey folks, I am pretty new here and also pretty new to FJ62s. I have done the search and also read through the FJ62 auto trans sticky. I havnt found anything so far.
I have a 1988 FJ62 with 117,000 miles. The truck has been well cared for and is in stock condition. The auto trans was flushed and had new fluid about 1 year ago. The problem is that when I really get on the gas and the truck downshifts it will not shift again after that. I can speed up or slow down and it stays in that gear. If I stop and start again most of the time it will shift back down into first and cycle through the gears correctly. If I drive slowly it will cycle through all of the gears flawlessly, it is only when I really get on the gas. Any help would be welcome.

just a guess, have you adjusted the kickdown cable? or maybe motor and trans mounts?

Not sure if it can even happen, but you may want to see if the Trans throttle cable linkage is sticking. Also adjust or add a couple of MM of slack.;)

Also, 117K!!! That suckers like new!:grinpimp:

I was thinking that might be my problem after reading this post:

Yes, it is a two owner truck that spent its life as weekend farm transportation! It was owned by a wealthy Toyota dealer here in NC.
So I doubt it is a major problem since this trans should have plenty of life left.

So I think maybe my kickdown cable is getting stuck?? Here are a couple of pictures in park with throttle closed. Does it seem like there is way too much slack there?

Way too much slack, I'd say it's either sticking or broken.

It seems to work most of the time except if I really get on the gas hard it will downshift really low and then it will not want to shift at the correct points after that for several days. Then it will just start working again and shifting at the normal rpms.

For comparison, when the throttle plate is closed on my truck, the crimped nub on the cable is about 3/16" away from that orange plastic cap, and the cable is near taught. If you tug on the cable, will it retract again, or does it stick in position? I wonder if it might be frayed and catching somewhere in the sheath.

It will not move either way right now. I just accelerated to make it downshift and it got stuck, so I immediately took this picture. Should I just remove the rubber sheeth to inspect the cable or is there somewhere else it could be sticking?

Removed the cable and soak the whole thing in a bow of kroil, or buy a new cable.
