Got pulled over by a neighborhood cop for having a dead passenger taillight on my ‘89 FJ62. I am 99% sure it’s NOT the bulbs as I just replaced it with an LED. I have 24 hours to remedy it.

I’ll check that (the bulb) in the morning of course but does anyone know of any other likely culprits? Are there any likely points of (wiring/fuse/etc.) failure the collective MUD mind can share with me?

Thanks in advance!!

Check the combination box that serves the rear tailgate.
It is in the driver’s side rear cargo compartment where the rear window washer fluid and the jack are located.

I had the same issue and the cause was corrosion in that blue(?) box , which I bypassed with a temporary wire until I could get at the whole box and cleared the corrosion, you might also verify that the grounds underneath the tailgate are clean and secure.

Thanks! Checked the combination box and happy to report that it's clean as a whistle. Swapped bulbs from the driver's side just to make sure it wasn't bulbs. Used the multimeter to confirm the sockets were getting power but it was spotty (3V vs 12V). Chased the ground and it was secure to the frame. But on further inspection, found the ground wire as it passed the rear driver's side corner had been poorly spliced at some point and so if I jiggled the wire, the lights would go on/off. Clipped the wire, cleaned everything up, respliced it (properly) and voila! Good as new.

Your clues were much appreciated, thank you. MUD mind for the win!

Those 35 yr old wires - good as new! Lol

Nice, easy soounding fix, where about in Westchester are you? Sounds like you have alot more experience than I do at this stage!

We're in Rye. How 'bout you?
Chappaqua, in laws are in rye/portchester. Nice to meet ya. Who pulled you over Westchester county or Rye pd? Rye got me recently for expired inspection, they are sticklers!

Local Harrison cop. Nice enough and if I'm going to look on the bright side, forced me to find/implement a permanent fix for the taillight and rear passenger side marker!
