I wish my mom lived in Chino Valley :crybaby:

BMAN,

Did you ever try to pass smog in Phoenix with the SBC or did you go straight to the Chino Valley idea?

Straight to the out of town gig. Don't even want to know if it's close. Same thing for the 60 someday.

Check it out, I called several DMV stations, even the one with the "referees".
I could change our address but then all of our vehicles had to be registered
out of county. Then created probs with insurance, same carrier for home and Auto. I've got less than $150 easy in parts and don't have to worry about it.

That statement is incorrect. I have 2 registered up north and the remainder are registered here.

So Bman,
What address do you have on your insurance?

62FJ40,
Once you got all the smog gear on your FJ40 with the SBC it passed emissions without a problem?

All insured at my Mesa home with my Home owners. Didn't tell the insurance Co that the truck was reg'd in Chino. Never had to prove residency either.

My deal goes like this:

Chino registration:
67 VW bug
69 TLC 40

Mesa registration:
2k1 Taco 4door
2k4 Sequoia

All 4 reg'd vehicles insured at my Mesa home along with my Home owners ins.

64 45 wag will be reg'd in Mesa (Someday)
85 fj60 w/ 350 will be reg'd in Chino (Someday)

My cousin just reg'd his 72 Bronco at his Heber address on Saturday and was never even looked at crooked.

I am still working on some things, steering shaft slop, Ford shock towers ect...
while it is apart. Been side tracked with landscaping and 2 1/2 yr and 6 mo old boys, So it hasn't been ran through yet. Per the smog guru's standards in '76
should be no prob. for a decent tuned 350.

BMAN, if I want to go the out of county route some other time, what address is on your drivers license? If it is the Chino address, if so then it doesn't match your Taco or Sequoia reg, if it is the Mesa address then it doesn't match DMV recordsor the Cruiser and VW reg. Won't the discrepancy show up if you get pulled over and they run registration through DMV?
For a '67 and '69 I think all you would have to have if anything is a PCV( I think but could be wrong that '71 was first year for PCV)

OK, sorry to drag up an old thread but with my FJ62 at the body shop right now and the stong possibility it might be totaled I am looking at this rig up in Utah.

So back to the original question with a twist - how hard would it be to get this vortec to pass smog in Phoenix?

Looks like a great deal. I don't think it's a huge deal to pass smog, and it may already be done. However, it's not super easy either. You need all the parts that fit on that engine from the junk yard. It takes a bit of time and several trips to the smog people. As for the sniff test, V8s pass quite easy since they are tested using the chassis values from the 6 cyl. As with all the vehicles I consider buying, it comes down to my predetermined threshold for straight, unrusted and painted body panels. After you fix everything mechanical up, you have to enjoy your ride. The intended use of the vehicle weighs heavily here.

Again... shouldn't be an issue at all, but you'll never know until you try.

Thanks guys. Anyone with a swapped in SBC gone through emissions without a problem?
Howdy! Been running a 350 in my Piggy for over 10 years in the valley, smog legal, with the comparable smog parts that were on the original engine. All works. AIR pump, EGR vavle, vapor recovery system, etc. No Cats required in 76. Only failed first test:crybaby: 3 times in all these years, fine tuned idle mix with C.O. meter, and passed retest with flying colors. Engine is bone stock from 77 full size sedan. Now has about 200,000 miles on it, never had the valve covers off yet. It must think it's a TOYOTA!:grinpimp: It's fun watching the technician look for a Toyota V8 before 1998. John

Thanks John. This rig in SLC has a 1997 Vortec engine so if it has all of the smog equipment then would the technicians consider the parts comparable to the 1988 3fe engine?

The "technicians" you speak of are trained to look for components. They put your VIN into the computer and it spits out a list of emission control components that the vehicle came with from the factory. Things like carbon canisters, PCV valves, air pumps, EGR valves, CATs etc. So whatever "component" is listed needs to be under the hood/car and appear to be properly connected and functioning. It does not have to be a Toyota component, just something that meets the description on the list. On some years, they still check for the proper operation of fuel vapor recovery systems if they can figure out how they are supposed to work (if). If you pass the visual, your idle is lean and you can pass the loaded sniff test. (read in tune), you're good.

On my 72 55 they don't even pop the hood. They only do the sniff test and the gas cap test. I think that is the case for all 74 and older trucks that need emissions.

Thanks for the input guys but it looks like once again I will not be going the V8 route. The insurance companies have decided not to total my cruiser but restore her to health. Now I have to see about gettting some interest in an ARB/OME group buy from Kurt. ANyone?
