FJ60 with SBC and emissions

Don't have one of those evil V-blocks, but a TBI conversion from a junkyard truck should make it pass smog easily.

I have been looking at this FJ60 https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=37871 which is currently up in Denver but am concerned with it passing emissions in Phoenix.

So for those of you with a SBC in a 60 series: What needs to be done to pass emissions in Phoenix?

Thanks
Arizona doesn't really care what engine you have in there. Unless you've converted gas to diesel or something like that. To get through AZ emissions you must pass a visual equipment inspection and a sniff test. If your vehicle is 1981 or newer (I think) you have to endure the more comprehensive IM240 test, which involves more time on the dyno and mechanical tests on the fuel vapor system. The visual inspections only look for the emission equipment that was in the vehicle at the time of it's manufacture (according to their list). This usually includes: Air pumps, diverter valves and associated plumbing. Catalytic converter. Carbon canister and a fuel vapor recovery plumbing. Crankcase air breathers, PCV valve and a gas cap with a good seal. In some cases they ignore the EGR valve even if it's equipped with one, I don't know why.

All of the equipment on their list must be present and "appear" to be functioning. If you can pass the visual and your engine is in good condition and proper tune, you should pass.

Thanks guys. Anyone with a swapped in SBC gone through emissions without a problem?

everyone with swapped in anything goes through just fine in AZ,,, real easy laws here.

you just need the equipement for the newer of the two and pass the sniffer.

I beg to differ ;)
It's the equipment listed that was present when the vehicle was made. Engine vintage makes no difference.

Or find a friend and register it in Flagstaff....

So, Hltoppr know anyone in Flagstaff that is willing to help?

Actually, I still have plenty of friends up in Flag (NAU undergrad degree "The best 7 years of my life")

I register at my Mom's place in Chino Valley. Works great for me.

This idea is coming from a guy that is an attorney and involved with the Coconino County Sheriffs Rescue folks so I’m assuming it is all legit… Right???

If you register your vehicle out of the county and work in the valley you will be ticketed ($311.00) if you get pulled over. Your drivers license address needs to match your registration and you cannot be employed in the valley. You need to be very careful in order for this to work.

Hmmmmmmm, I think you could contest that. Only if your registration shows a legitimate address out of the county that you can show residential standing at. I think the proof required would be a utility bill in your or the registered owners name. Of course getting popped during rush hour on your way to work might be a tough argument to convince a judge. Still, the burden of proof is theirs, not yours. "Honestly your honor, I was just passing through the city on the end of my vacation" (at the out of county address). :D

I was going to use my mother in laws address in Sedona to register my '76 FJ40
Dmv said I would have to register all my vehicles there. I said we had a cabin
up there that we would be keeping the 40 at but it didn't matter.

Call the emmisions station near the airport. The guy I talked to was real helpful
will tell you exactly what equipment it will need.

For my '76 it was PCV, vapor canister, smog pump, diverter valve, and A.I.R. injection tubes. No catalytic converter cause Toyota didn't have them in '76
but most domestic stuff did. got lucky.

with the vapor canister there is a 2 port and a 5 port, I was early enough to get away with 2 port but they recomend 5 port. I went to their office and the guy made copies of all the hose routing diagrams and part #'s for the A.I.R injection system

If you have headers the Tubes can be welded into them near the exhaust ports.
There are some that say you can put them further down at the collector but he said that won't fly any more.

Don't trust the "opinions" of DMV employees. Call another one and I'll bet you get a different answer every time.

If you're a legal resident in another county, no one can prevent you from using that address to register a vehicle. Of course that's just my "opinion".

P.S. Keep all that good documentation you got from the referee station with you whenever you get tested. It could save you a return trip for no good reason. There'a a lot of "experts" working those places too.

Remember, just because a person has a position of authority, it doesn't mean they know what they're doing :)

I simply went to the Az DMV website and changed my addy on my license to my mom's place. From there I went to the DMV and registered my 40 using that addy and my DL#. My DL# shows the Chino addy on the DMV computers. I leave that as my residence and use my PO box in Mesa, az my mailing addy. If pulled over in town I simply will inform the officer that I am here visiting. My license registration and insurance all match, and therefore it's not illegal for me to "drive through town". Am I at risk? Sure, probably, but as someone else stated, the honus is on them to prove that I don't live in Chino.

As long as you are not driving a Border truck :flipoff2:
