Jeez Georg! That is a gorgeous looking case!

Scott, I just realized I have been logged out of MUD for a few days. Cleaned out my cookies and forgot to log back in. Just saw there's a PM.

Looks like things are getting sorted out though!

parts washer and bead blaster........all my rebuilds get that "spa treatment".

That is a beautiful split case if I ever saw one!

Thanks for the measurements Georg. I'll do some more investigating and let you know what I find out.

Glad I could help. It's part of my job. Besides, I'm stubborn and like to figure things out.

Hey Scott.
I got the case half. As suspected, the bearing bore is worn. From what I see the damage was caused by too much grease in the slip joint of the front driveline.
So your case half is no good. But I have a spare. Will call you in a few.

Hey Georg

Have you ever used one of the Loctite bearing retainer products that is made specifically for such instances? Such as Loctite 660? First learned about these from the mechanics at work who use them on gearboxes and other cases that are not available anymore.

Permatex also makes compounds for this which is what I used when I rebuilt my t-case about 10K miles ago and no problem so far.

Hey Tony.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I have used those "adhesives" but they're fairly permanent. Once you install that bearing it ain't coming back out. Under some circumstances it can be the only option. But luckily case halves are not that difficult to come by so I'd rather run a good half before having to rely on the "last option".

As always, Your input is valid and appreciated!

Surprisingly the Loctite manuals I have say that just about all their products will come apart with the application of heat. About 500 degrees Haven't had to try this and hope I won't ever have to :D

I'm just jealous of all the parts you have....

Tony

Anything comes apart with heat!:grinpimp: but I can't guarantee that any of the left over parts will be useable.

As for my parts stash, that's a double edged sword. Yes, it's great to have parts on hand for when you need them. That way you don't have to pay a premium, pay for shipping and wait for them to get here hoping they're what you want/need. On the other hand, almost a third of my shop space is now devoted to parts storage. And that costs money. So I have to be smart about what I buy and keep for future usage. And I have to be careful about how much money I "invest" in parts........

Georg,
Do you have any photo's of what the bad part looks like. I think I have a case the same way. Retaining nut staked about 10 times and it has play in it.

thx matt

Hey matt.
Is the stake nut loose on the front output shaft? Post a pic if you can.

hey scott.
did UPS bring you a box of goodies yet?
happy new year!

Not yet, but I'll let you know when it arrives. Will be a week until I can get it swapped out. Maybe we'll have a nice Texas ice storm after that so I can try 4WD out.

Got it all this afternoon. The case 1/2 looks PURDY and the output flange is good and tight- just like from the factory. Thanks a million Georg! I'll post up once I get it all buttoned back up.

Good news, Scott!

Well, good news and bad news.

The good news is Georg sent me a replacement front case 1/2 with the front output flange installed already. I got it put back in and everything is good and tight.

The bad news is- I still have a front driveline vibration with the front hubs locked and in 4WD Hi on the highway at speeds over about 45-50.

I have already rebuild the front axle (but didn't touch the 3rd member).
The front pinion flange is tight- no play that I can detect.
After thinking about it, the vibration may have showed up about the time I installed my SOR Comfort Ride springs (1.5-2 inch lift). I actually got almost 5 inches of lift since the front end was sagging so much.

So...where to next? Pull the 3rd member?
Caster correction? Would the driveline angle be affected enough to cause this?

that's a driveline issue.

here's my question:

do you really need to drive faster than 30 mph in 4wd?????

georg

No, I definitely don't. I'm only testing it out to see whether it is fixed. But, it is also doing it in 2Hi with the front hubs locked, and I would think I could drive highway speeds with the front hubs locked. I used to be able to when I bought my truck (before I started working on it!)

the probelm you're having is due to the angle of the front driveline yokes in relationship to each other. one way to fix this would be to install a cv driveshaft ( or at least the cv portion of an early fj60 front driveshaft ) in your cruiser.
i bet it has nothing to do with the t-case or front diff.

Bummer. That's the whole reason I went with the Specter Comfort Ride Springs and stock shackles instead of OME- to avoid having caster and driveline issues and needing bigger tires, gears, etc.
