So i have been searching both here and online and can't seem to figure this out. I need to replace my shocks on my 84 fj60. I am using stock springs with what i am pretty sure are 2" shackles. Can i use stock shocks or do they have to be specified for length? I know old man emu would work but wanted to see what other options i could run. I am not sure what blisteins would fit. I like ccot's bds shocks but according to their website they will not fit with stock springs even with shackles!

One way is to go flex out your cruiser. Measure full compression and full extension for both. Then look at lengths of shocks And the options will be greater for you of the ones you know will and will not work. But make sure to get one a little shorter body then what you measure fully compressed so you aren't using them as bump stops or limiting straps for that matter

Agreed. Flex it out and measure from eye to eye. I actually just ordered some bilstein 5125's this morning and there are charts you can look at that tell you the fully compressed lengths, full extension lengths, valving, etc.. Although I don't think bilstien makes shocks that will work with the stock upper mounts since stock mount is post style. It needs to be an eyelet. I'd say for your applications the OME's would be your best bet. They're a solid shock and they last a long time.

yeah may just go that route with the ome's. Shipping and handling hurts thats all!

Actually bilstien does make a shock that works with the stock front upper mount. The 5150 series I run these on my 60 and they work fine. You will still need to measure to get the right length, also they come in different valving so you will want to make sure the valving is correct for the load you plan on carrying and you will need the stud conversion kit from bilstien for the front. Mine are a little on the long side in the rear compressed so I run bump stop spacers so I don't bottom out the shocks but I ordered mine that way on purpose to get more droop in the back.

hmmm blistein 5150's thanks for the heads up!

I have seen more than one broken front shock mount on a 60. I suggest you do yourself a favor now, before buying the shocks, by welding on a decent upper mount that will accept an eye mount shock. Then your choices go way up and you have fixed something that can and has failed.

will look into that!

How hard is it to go the hoops route? Probably will be putting shocks on the back burner as the kids trip to the dentist just burned me but at least i know what direction to go!

Problem with most aftermarket hoops SUA is that it moves the top eye too high unless you cut them down.

I used them but I also relocated the lower eye mount higher on the axles.

Can you weld? This is the question d'jours. If you don't have access to a welder, that makes this difficult. I used Ford towers, very common, cheap and effective but it is a weld-on thing.

Marlin crawler has a set of hoops for $69. Seats on their website they can custom length them for you since they make them in house. Bolt them in and weld them and your good to go

Never welded before but access to peeps who can! Will let everyone know how i come out!

I was never impressed with my 5150's....seems like they blew their seals and started pissing all over the place...very early and without much in the way of abuse.

Switched to 5100's (no remote rez.) and they were marginally better.

Truckspring supplied a set of Bilsteins to suit my HJ61. I couldn't be happier with them, smoother ride when empty and work well when loaded.

So far I have been happy with my Skyjacker M95s. They were a little pricey but whatever. It has definitely made a difference with the rear springs being swapped now.
