Yesterday after a day of driving normally, my 60 started running really rough. The idle dropped, and it feels like I don't have as much horsepower, especially in first gear. I filled that truck with gas, and the next time I drove it, the issue started.

The motor used to sound relatively smooth, especially in idle. Now it sounds as if one of the cylinders isn't firing. I pushed on all of the plug connectors- but I have never changed the plugs on this truck.

Any thoughts on what this could be?

plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter, carb, idle circuit, etc etc.

Start with the easy and cheap stuff first. Cap and rotor is an easy inspection. Wires you can do a visual on then check the Ohms on them. Plugs are easy once the cleaner comes off. Visual inspection is all that is needed there. Fuel filter, if it hasn't been changed in a while, good time. Also check all of your rubber fuel lines. Old lines will deteriorate from the inside and will peel small pieces which end up in the idle circuit in the carb and things are NOT happy then. Start there.

X2....also let it sit and drain abit out of the tank, maybe some bad stuff in the tank of gas???

After reading a number of posts, I started looking at the EGR valve. Like most issues I have read about, I think that was something that was causing trouble, but not the whole issue.

I am planning on pulling the EGR valve an cleaning it, but as a temp. solution I did the work around by plugging the vac hose from the EGR valve to the EGR modulator.

I had hoped that would solve the problem, but it did not completely. The truck ins't running rough anymore, but it seems way underpowered in the low RPM- from 900 to 1500, especially when starting out in first gear. It bogs down and then ones it gets up past around 1600 RPM it seems to pick up.

So- now I am digging back in- So, I am going to check CAP and Rotor (How do I do this? What am I looking for?)

How do I do a visual check on the Ohms? I did change the fuel filter, but didn't seem to fix the problem. All the fuel lines were replaced by the PO not too long ago.

Any thoughts (with details or links to instructions for a newbie) would be much appreciated!

Thanks-

Look for fuel supply first- Is there fuel 1/2 way up the sight glass on the front of the carb?

You could have dislodged something from one of the fuel lines. In addition to the fuel filter, there is a small screen inside the metal fuel line that connects to the carburetor- that could be clogged.

Is the fuel pump original? Are there any leaks from the fuel pump (it usually leaks before it gives out).

If the EGR valve is not working, bypassing it by plugging the line going into the top of it should temporarily fix the problem.
