I have been working on my 60 for a few days. This is mainly due to procrastinating fixing my leaking power steering pump. On Friday of last week my leaking pump destroyed my smog pump (completed a desmog hoping to improve reliability).
I have had a hard time finding a cost effective power steering pump replacement. Most of the parts houses still show the $81.00 A-1 Cardone part on their websites, however all of them are out of stock. The other replacements I found were between $390- $510. So I spent a large part of the day with the rebuild kit for the pump. I got frustrated trying to put the springs and shoes back together. I have since spent another few hours online looking for a replacement. I finally found one at "Parts Geek" for $160. I paid extra to get it shipped overnight. If it is a good fit I will probably buy another one and put it on the shelf.
If anyone is facing a similar issue I would suggest buying one sooner rather than waiting.
I also noticed the cheaper Power steering boxes are no longer available. It may be worth buying one if you can find it for less than $500.

Unfortunately you may find that the rebuilt pumps don't last long. There is a bushing in the pump that wears which Toyota does not sell separately.

Although you may have found an aftermarket "rebuilt" pump for half the price of a new Toyota PS pump, the chances that it will only last half as long (if that) are extremely high.

And buying two of them will cost almost the same amount as a new Toyota pump, which if you shop around can be had for $381.

And a new Toyota pump will probably outlast the life of the truck, if you use a full synthetic ATF and a tranny micro-filter on it.

Been there, done that. Rebuilt pump lasted one year. Put in a Saginaw. Superior pump. Never going back.

You can also set the saginaw up as a water pump tensioner, to elimnate your smog pump if that is an option for you.

I would like to here more about that option. Parts Geek sent me an email stating their parties also out of stock and they will refund my money in 2-3 days. This sucks, my 60 is my daily driver. She's been on jack stands for almost a week.

fj60 saginaw install without welder - desmogged

I haven't had much luck finding a Volvo pump with a pulley. No pick n pulls in my area.

Same, I switched to saginaw with MAF parts and NAPA belt

I assume there a thread here that addresses this conversion. I will check it out. Thanks for the input.

I spent some time looking at the Saginaw upgrade. There is a lot to be done in sourcing a pump and solving the pulley issues . I am running 33's and I think I will begin working on this fix but want to take my time and get it right the first time. I don't like half ass repairs. Meanwhile I ordered a new pump from toyotapart.com. $420 and it will be here next Wednesday. Guess I will be sharing a car with Mama for a few more days. Thanks the replies. I do better "thinking out loud" when trying to solve issues.

FWIW, many people experience a PS gearbox leak after installing the sag pump, as its pressure is higher than the Toyota and it blows out old gearbox seals. With new seals, it's fine.

Also, since you're getting a new OEM pump (good choice!) one way to try to make it outlive you, is to replace the fluid more frequently.

A real lazy way of extending the life of the fluid (and pump) is to suck the ATF out of the PS reservoir with a big syringe and refill (when engine is off) at every engine oil change.

Although this is only a partial replacement of the PS ATF, it is super easy to do without getting air in the system or spending much time.

8 ounces of new fresh ATF is always better than old.

That sounds reasonable, I am also going to run a filter with new pump.

Doesn't the Toyota pulley cost nearly as much as the pump?

I saw the pulley priced separately for around $170. With the new assembly the pulley and reservoir come with the pump.

I will post a picture of the assembly when I receive it. I just received the email confirmation that the part will be delivered next Friday.

I didn't realize that! The main reason I was planning on swapping to saginaw is my wobbling pulley. I know it will eventually wear out the bushing, and I was thinking I had to buy the pump and pulley separately to replace them.

If there is an existing bushing that is slightly over sized I could always turn them down to fit the pump, let me know if you guys know if any.
