I think clemson made a reference to an article in tech section for putting fj60 power steering in fj55. I can't find it, maybe I'm looking in wrong place. I can find tidbits and comments that it is a great or best conversion when searching. thanks for any help.

yeah i did it and posted some pics,,,,, sorry cant post pics right now as my puter wont let me open clickable links for some reason w/o a cut and paste to the adress bar:confused: and of course to upload pics i need to click the link... so, i'll be happy to help out with the written word;)

Just search threads I started its in the 55 section and I think its called power steering. There are like 3 or 4 links in it. I have all the stuff in a box and just havent done it yet. Hopefully in the fall.

I did it in my last 55 and it turned out great and would do it again. My only complaint is that with hysteer arms it took about 3/4 turn to make a turn that most vehicles would do in less than 1/2 a turn. And that it works well but it is still semi-weak, I would probably do a Scout box (identical design, but it is American saginaw brand, heavier duty) next time if running larger tires. But I would also do a 60 box again too..

It basically bolts in with minor mods.. Take the FJ60 steering shaft that bolts into your 55 column. I plated my frame with some 3/8" thick steel plating.. Then I drilled the 4 holes through the plating and it worked great. If you don't plate then you have to sleeve or do something to make the frame stronger. When you remove the box from the FJ60 frame, you will see the sleeves they use in the OEM setup. You could reuse these with your conversion and use a hole saw to cut the frame... Then I ran the PS lines to the sagnaw pump I had on my engine. It all worked very well, a little mysterious but not hard at all IMO...

Here are some old pictures of how I installed it before I installed my engine. Of course this was a mistake to I had to redo this and I eventually moved it forward and used the FJ60 connecting shaft, which is much longer...

thanks for the help. looks like the way I want to go.
I have done mini truck conversion on a fj45 though it looks almost factory am not overly impressed with how it handles 10 inch wide 33s while parallel parking.

jm599,

If you do this, can you take some pics for all us who may want to do this in the future?

Thanks,

Brian

will do. might be a few months though.

FJ60 PS box

Mark Whatley authored an excellent article in the July/August 2003 issue of Toyota Trails on using an FJ60 box in a 40. During the spring over on my 55 I used FJ62 axles and also used the power steering box from the same truck. FJ62 PS boxes are the same as the later FJ60 boxes. We used Whatley's method- cut a piece of 3/4" steel, drilled and tapped it for metric fasteneres, located it accurately on the frame rail, then welded the plate solid. Looks great, is simple and works fine. For a shock tower we used a piece of box tubing and some plate and fabbed up a neat tower.

For what it's worth I don't like the idea of attaching the 60/60 steering box directly to the frame rails of a 40 or 55. It's easy to make up a plate and the offset actually improves the alignment for the steering shaft (column).

While in stock configuration (non-sprung over, that is) I ran a solid axle mini truck PS box using a mountin g bracket from Iron Pig Offroad. That was truly a bolt in improvement, no modes needed to the steering shaft at all. I did have to retain the 55 pitman arm but it fit right onto the mini truck box. Shmukster (Gary S)

I went through some old pics, sorry guys these are about as good as I have.. You can also see the ford towers. The big thing here was to point out the FJ62 axles underneath the 55, not the PS conversion, sorry...
