Et all,

Newbie here and I'm probably going to be getting flamed for this one but the asbestos suit is on so have at it.

New owner, bought my FJ60 in March and since have put on 15k miles. Absoultely *love* it. First 12k miles was in the first 2 months of ownership. :D

Been doing a bunch of cross country travel and I'm crusing around 75 mph. Sometimes ~ 80 mph. I'm getting close to the magical 4k redline limit on the tac and I was wondering ...

How close can I get to redline and still be safe ???

Cheers,
Cahil

P.S. Ex-porsche guy, it's all about vibration, doubt me? Ask da' women! ::)

It kinda depends if that is a stock 2f you running in there. I have 200K on my stocked Fj60 and i never take her above 3000 rpm's. And with 31's on there i can go about 65 mph at 2800 rpms...sometimes if i am not paying attention i'll get it up to 70 at close to 3000 rpms but i don't like to run her that hard. To me i would think running it that hard at close to 4000 rpms is not a good thing if you want that 2f to last. Especially if your driving that much.

Thanks for the info BigSur,

I'm running a stock 2F, 4 speed manual, and 31" Goodyear MTR's. FJ60, 1987, October 1986 build. The rest of the truck is stock too. Almost down to every nut-n-bolt except for a couple of exhaust bolts. ;)

Using Mobil One 15w-50 and fern juice in the lower gear boxes.

When I first go the truck she ran bad. Sluggish, no acceleration, bad handling, excetera. Since I've dropped about 4k into her and been able to produce the ride I have now. Irealize these vehicles are not speed demons but I've been facinated with the change in her driving behavior from the work I have done.

Mudrak says 3500 is about the limit. I typically don't go past 3000 except occasionally on an upshift. Good oil choice though. Still over 3500 you are in untested territory. Just remember it's a tractor motor. You might consider an H55f 5 speed to lower your revs at speed.

Thanks CruiserDrew,

Yup H55F is the next mod of choice, however I have run out of money for that project right now.

I've sorta set 3500 rpm as my personal max.

Howver, this project has been facinating to me. At 75 mph and 3250 rpm my truck runs as smooth as *glass*. If I wasn't watching the revs I'd easily hit 3500k or the magical 4k limit.

Concerning Mobil One, after I has the valve lash done I still had a couple of sticky or knocking valves. Oil changed to Mobil One, 100 miles later, no more knock. Thicker oil ??? Synthetic ??? Detergents ??? All of the above ???

Have fun, be safe, drive fast.

Cahil...

Can you give us a listing of the work you have done thus far? If it is too much to write, that is fine. I have had my 60 for a little over a week now, so I am interested in getting her in tip-top form. Pics?

Ive got a diesel and I dont want to go over 3400 RPM.

I live 2200 on the highway.

Sure Statts, no problem, here's the short list.

Completely replace anything non Toyota OEM. Possible exceptions are spring/shock system and air cleaner(K&N).

Check everything for Toyota OEM. Dizzy cap/rotor, plugs. wires, etc.

Get the valve lash done, *NOW*, unless you know the history.

How's the carb ? Rebuild it ?

Factory Toyota OEM exhaust, unless your *REALLY* know what you are doing.

Change all fluids, religiously. Change your oil, change it again. Synthetics are better but more expensive. No more than 5k between oil changes, regardless. Filters are good but cannot remove the harmful chemicals.

Use a Toyota OEM oil filter, they are better.

Alignment: Get it done.

Anything loose ? Steering ? Front wheel bearings ? Fix it.

Tires: high quality and *ROAD FORCE BALANCE* please !!! Hunter makes the balancer and it costs about $12k. By default all Toyota dealers have one. Book time to road force balance tires is 1.5 hours. Yes, it takes this long to be done correctly, especially the first time.

Address, diagnose, and repair any and all leaks in your rig.

New water pump. If your water pump fails because of the design and heat from a 2F motor, you may/maynot loose the motor. Replace it with a *NEW* not rebuilt unit.

Only use rebuilt electrical units, rebuilt fluid pumps to do correctly(bearings) cost more that new units.

Have perfect brakes.

Have perfect emergency brake.

Anyting else ? I'm sure others will chime in ...

What have I missed ?

Questions ? My cell is 240.888.1948.
