I have heard that you can retrofit a FJ60 hood rod into an Fj80.

Can anyone shed some light on this mod?
Pictures?
part numbers?

TIA

Wow, that was quick. You must have your local dealer on speed dial.:D These parts are on my never ending Cruiser list.:bang::)

Typically I call Cdan, but for small stuff (or big if cdan can not ship like inner-fenders) I called a local Lexus dealer.
Alas, this is a toyota part number and he couldn't get it.
So my third choice is the local Toyota dealer that takes care of my wife's 2005 RAV4.

all three on my speed dial. :-)

Got the hood rod today. Installed in 5 minutes.
I find it interesting how the top hook is few ticks short of full hood opening. That cause the hood to apply upward pressure on the rod, and hence securing it in place. If you push the hood down, as in wind gust, it moves along slit in the hood, but does not come off.

I find it interesting how well it works. Typically a rod and gas springs don't go together. So the hood in this case does not sit on the rod, but because it is a bit short, it stays secure.

Not bad for $28 including tax and shipping from a local dealer.

I am having a problem with the white clip.
It can get it secured when it is the wrong orienation.
When it is the right orientation like in this picture, it does not snap in all the way.

Any trick to it?

I recognize that photo. ;)

I can't recall it being difficult to install at all. Has held since day one in the rig, no issues. Does the hole look significantly different from the clip? Tried pressing it a bit more to lock it into place? Push it into place 90 degrees out of phase, then twist 90 degrees into phase?

The square hole had a lip on the inside/bottom that prevented the tabs on the clip to snap. In other words the lip made it too thick.

I filed the inside lip (ridge) and the white clip snapped right in.

It really is the best of both worlds. Gas springs to lift the hood easily, prop rod to make it secure. For $28 I think this is a must.

I like this alot my hood struts are shot
I need to get this
My hood came down on head the other day
Much cheaper than hood struts

Try to look for pick and pulls on this kind of stuff, I got it for free. Guy up front didn't even charge me for the 3 pieces.

Yeh, but a new one is shiny, the plastic is not brittle, and the rubber grommet is still playable. :-)

I need this mod, got a big dumbass 80 hood to the back of the dome the other day. Not fun

Sent from my HTC EVO4G using IH8MUD

Beats getting your hand pinned under a fully latched hood.:crybaby:

The stow shoe and grommet are easily attained at a good auto body supply store for ~$3.

Will someone post a pic of where the hood prop rod connects at the base to
the area in front of the radiator for an 85 FJ60?

Something is missing on mine.

thanks in advance.
