sourced out a set of new oem hood prop, clip and grommet for $24 picked up at cabe brothers toyota in long beach, ca.
kept the original oem hood struts

A 60 rod works well, but you have to lean it on the ground and stomp on it a couple of times.:hillbilly: The grommet and stow shoe was available at the local auto body supple for about $2.

Whats the part number on these props? Got photos?thanks!

Thanks! I kinda feel more secure with a real prop. :) Will ask the Toyota stealer for details.

I did this to my 80 today. Ordered the new clip and grommet from Mr. T.

I stopped by Pick A Part for a prop rod. Found a '94 Pickup to snag a rod from. It's probably an inch shorter than it should be, but works perfectly fine. I added a slight bend toake it fit well.

I spent less than $10, for some invaluable peace of mind. Thanks Mud!

A buddy of mine uses the hood prop from his 1968 Camaro he had when he was in high school. Didn't require any bending, grommets, or clips. Holds the hood up very well and doesn't rattle around on the trail, either.

Not the best picture, but hopefully you can make it out on his rig in this picture:
