Hi Guys, this is a bit unrelated to this thread. So just direct me in the right direction if need be. I've been following this for about a week and love the idea of it. I would love to do something like this. But I have different plans already. I'll get to the point, i'm traveling to NM to pick up a an FJ60. Being that I'll be driving and sleeping in it for a week to 2 weeks straight. I'm wondering if you guys could recommend a reputable mechanic in the Alamogordo area ? I'm traveling from Hawaii to pick up the FJ60, so I don't have any tools and will need assistance on making sure my new 60 is road worthy. Any assistance would be welcome. Oh yeah, can anyone recommend places to car camp ? And is there any rules I need to know about car camping in NM, CO, Utah, NV & AZ ? Any advice is appreciated

@pappy, can you move this to a new thread in HDC please? This needs to get some attention that won't be happening in this thread, I suspect.

Camping is easy, as long as you are on public land. While there are plenty of campgrounds, you can also disperse camp. Most of the time you need to stay within 50 feet of a road on BLM and forest land. Sounds like you might be headed north from NM. Plenty of forest land, though right now there is a bunch of snow, with resulting closed roads.

Sorry, can't help with a mechanic in Alamogordo. Get the truck to ABQ and I suspect a few of us would be glad to crawl over it.

Thanks Pappy

I'm sure ABQ would be easy, I hope so..... But I'm going to repost in it's own thread. I just wanted to touch base with HDC Club and respectfully check in with y'all since I'll be in your district.

This is already done by Pappy!

Suggestion. Stop by a self-serve car wash and blast the crap out of the underneath, especially the tranny, TC, and bottom of the engine. That will help to ID leaks. Also, if you are brave, wash the engine, especially the side cover, but make sure the breathers are connected on the dizzy cap or you will have wet bits.

My dad is a retired Toyota mechanic and owns an FJ60. If you can get it to Albuquerque and willing to stay a day or two, I'm sure he'd be happy to look it over for you for a very small fee. The worst part of this arrangement is having to hang out with my dad for that long a period of time. He's kind of crotchety and likes to talk, a lot. But he is very knowledgeable. Send me a PM if this interests you and I will send you his phone number.
