I'm going to have to recommend FOR the manuf' recommended, and AGAINST "crappy" gas.. I personally only run chevron supreme in my maxima, but it's also a high perf high compression engine and it chokes on 87 and CEL's on 89. As for other cars, I'll put the '76 "10% ethanol" regular in, because 1. it's the least expensive around and 2. They don't really need any more.

I'd steer clear of gas that you know to be 'crappy'. Why put 'crappy' gas in your car?

Basically +1 to what DBS311 said. Lower octane ≠ crappy

I've run Coleman fuel in mine. It is supposedly around 83 octane unleaded.
Ran fine, but the idle speed seemed a little slower? Usually run whatever is cheapest. Coleman fuel is free when cleaning out last year's camping equipment.:D

The engines that are knocking or pinging on lower octane fuel have too much timing. If running a stock dissy, this is a real problem.

desmogged, plus a couple degrees of base timing plus 26 degrees mechanical advance plus 18 degrees vacuum advance=
Seriously overadvanced timing!

More specifically, up to 10+26+18= 54deg!

I'll bet there is audible spark knock. That's 15-20 degrees past peak power.
