It was an early in the morning, the engine still warming up I had to rev up a little to pass a slow moving truck. After momentary deceleration during shifting I heard huge earth shattering solid BANG! and the I had a little louder Landcruza.

Well as you can see my muffler did not survive the explosion and literally got torn apart.

QUESTION: I'm soon due for smog, what 2" "performance" muffler as well as CAT can I legally install in California? I don't mind a bit of a sound but since I'm due soon for smog and I don't want a problem with CAT or muffler.

Anyone knows? Thanks.

Put a factory one back on. I don't believe you are going to gain any performance with a Flowmaster on an otherwise stock 2F. I've got a welded downey muffler with 2.5 on my FJ62 and it drones at odd rpms, with no increase in power.

Sounds like you got a huge backfire!

Looks like it too!

Thanks for posting that picture haha

I had that happen on a Jeep TJ. The cause was my CAT. the cat had a peice come loose and came back into the muffler. after a while the back pressure in the muffler was more then it could handle. Any 50 state legal replacement shouldnt hurt your chances for passing smog, i am sure the 2f will find a way to fail you on its own.

Hey! Mine looks just like that!!!

Choke was still on I bet...

You need to get a cat/muffler that specifically says CA legal on it. In stamped letters, visible from underneath. This is part of the smog inspection and you will fail (if the inspector is a prick, which is likely), if you do not have this stamped on it.
cheers,

like when we were kids and would shut off the key while driving then turn it back on... BOOM !! every once in a while a muffler would get blown up ...

also, check your decel fuel cut solenoid and its wiring

Congrats! You somehow had in your muffler an air/fuel ratio somewhere close to stoichiometric. Needless to say, but you have a problem. Fuel cutoff solenoid or excessive air in the exhaust, could be a number of things or a combination of several. Time for an in-depth under-the-hood review. A long, long time ago I had a lowly Pinto that did this because a crack in the colector pipe let in air. The muffler looked like an accordian afterwards.

yeah, the air pump lines on mine were shot...

i put a magna flow on my 60 with 2.25 pipes and i got over 15 mpg freeway, i think 2.5 is a little big for the 2F? idk but a muffler worked for me

COOL! That had to generate some shrapnel.
