This ain't no VW Bus.

Do I really have to pull the engine, tranny and xfer case all at the same time? Looks that way, unless there is a way to get to the passenger side tranny/bell housing bolts.

Suggestions?

No.

1. Disassemble transfer case on truck. Unbolt T-case from tranny.
2. Support read of engine to the ground.
3. Suuport tranny on floor jack/tranny jack and unbolt from engine. CAREFULLY unstab input shaft.
4. Unbolt front engine mounts and remove engine

Got It

Thanks a bunch for the response, Greg.

I got it done this morning. Sometimes stopping and thinking, and eating and sleeping, is all you need to get past a puzzle.

So I removed the front drive shaft and that gave me the room I needed to get to the two tranny/bell housing bolts on the pass. side, with some creative use of extensions and the swivel. I removed the clutch slave from the bracket and let it hang.

To aid access I had removed the big/rear skid plate. Right before the final pull I put it back on, so the trannny/xfer case could rest on it. Worked like a charm. Doing it this way enables me to move the vehicle around the yard.

The engine came forward without any trouble or clutch damage, and up and out. It's laying in the garage now.

The donor vehicle will be here this week - a '84 rust bucket 60 from New York that has a rebuilt engine and tranny. Compression in that engine looks great, and it sounds awesome compared to the one I've been running. The frame is missing big rusty chunks! And what's left looks like something dragged up from the Titanic. Metallic brown paint - named it "The Turd". Perfect for parting out.

Was going to rebuild the original engine from my white '84, but decided to go with the $700 Turd with a decent engine and a lot of other good parts.

More to come . . .

Greg

Good job! Thought you were doing tranny/xfer work also, but if engine only you took the easiest route. Definitely replace your clutch since it's out unless it's really, really new.

Engine Only

Greg,

Just pulling the engine to swap in the one from The Turd. Trying to keep things as simple as possible! The extras from The Turd will be mothballed until I need 'em or sell 'em.

One thing nice about the 60s is that they can serve as their own mobile parts storage unit!

Thanks again for the reply.

Greg

PS - The clutch disc that came out with the bad engine looks good. The other should be good too, considering it was part of a complete rebuild about 20K ago. If not I'll use the one I just pulled. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey, so I'm trying to do something similar to this only for my '88 Fj62. My compression in the current engine is bad, so I bought an identical 3FE with 69k on it. My dad just wants to have a shop do the replacement, but I'd rather do it myself. How much work would a straight swap be? What exactly is the entire process, and what other coo nets would need to be replaced along the way?? Any help would be great, trying to get this done this summer before heading back down to school.

Describing the "exact process" is above what could be included in a thread. I would suggest finding a factory service manual that will have the 25+ step procedure to pull the engine. You might be able to find the FSM digital online.

That said, the only suggestion I can offer is to disconnect the engine harness from behind the glove box, and pull the harness through the firewall. Remove the engine with the harness attached. Also, a 3FE is one heavy mother. Have help, go slow, and find a beefy hoist if you are pulling it out intact.

Also, one little trick when removing the hood. Drill a 1/8" hole through each hood bracket into the hood. That way when you go to put the hood on you can insert the drill bit and get the bolts lined up where they were to begin with.

It is 720 pages...

Search FSM and Trollhole in the for sale section for the original link

do the engine rear main seal while you are swapping the transmission.

I've been looking all over, even asking at the 3FE Yahoo Group. There might be a digital copy available for a price. How soon do you need it? I can copy the necessary sections to pull an engine from mine.
