Benn there, done that... twice.
I've done two desmogs on FJ60s. It was shocking how big the pile of garbage was! Both times I replaced the stock carb with a Weber. The end result was beautiful! The carb had only a wire to the electric choke, a fuel line and a vaccuum advance hose going to the carburator, plus the air cleaner and PCV going into the carb base. CLEAN! and they run better without all that stuff. I ran headers with both, so we had no more need for the cooling fan since vapor locking never happens when the exhaust manifold isn't bolted to the intake manifold. All sensors, twelve miles of tubing, the guts to the air pump, air tubes to the exhaust, all gone. It's enough to make you cry when look at how elegantly simple the whole engine is like that, and you know what all the parts are!
