'84 fj 60. since the weather warmed up, after the engine is warm and i shut er down she always diesels, and when i start the engine again and get going it stalls. never did any of this when it was cold (weather and engine). did it rarely last summer and changing the fuel filter didnt help. my mechanic says he checked a few things and adjusted the timing and if it still did it i need a carb rebuild. is he trying to get a buck out of me because he thinks i dont know jack???? if it does need a rebuild, can your average er jane do it without too many special tools? (outside the realm of screwdrivers and wrenches)

Probably not much help.....but I can say that one probable cause of the dieseling is your throttle isn't completly closing when shutting off the engine. Which is allowing fuel into the combustion chamber after shut-down, the engine probably has enough carbon build-up which remains hot enough to allow the engine to run with no spark.

Check your throttle linkage, make sure it's not getting caught up on anything and it operates smoothly. Spray some penetrating oil on it to get it lube up. Sorry...that's all I know.

Good luck-

recheck your timing and all vacuum hoses

Hi-

Check all your vacuum lines for cracks and holes and such. Better yet, replace them all if they are the original old lines. Be sure to check the 4 lines that come off the passenger side of the carb. You may have to remove your Air cleaner assy to get access to them. Squirt carb cleaner or air through all brass ports on your carb as well. Make sure your PCV lines are not leaking and check all the large hoses that come off the Air Cleaner.

Just for your own peace of mind, recheck your timing and adjust it as necessary. If your timing is off it can cause your engine to act very strangely. My new 60 was recently dead for 2 weeks before I got her resurrected. One day she was running like a champ, the next she was dead. After much carb and vacuum trial and tribulation, I got her running. Once she was running, she started deiseling and bucking and running all crazy. It turns out the PO had adjusted the timing way too advanced and once she was all fixed, the advanced timing screwed things up pretty badly.

After I set her timing properly, she runs great. Dieseling stopped immediately and it was a 1 minute fix. I have also been doing micro timing adjustments to see how it effects MPG.

I got her dialed in to 15.5 MPG on hills and in town. Not bad at all.

Mine diesels too. Only if I shut her down with the stereo, fan and lights on though.... got me... If I turn all the accessories off then she shuts down fine. I can't see this being a timing/vacuum problem.... but I really have no idea at all why It would be so fickle. Any Ideas???

Mine diesels when i use low octane. With premium it never does it but one tank of the cheep stuff and it will start again

My FJ60 has similar problems, If I start it up and let it run it warms up nice, When I shut it down and start it up later it's hard starting. I think I may have a fuel cut-off solenoid problem also...Can someone tell me where the fuel cut-off solenoid is located. If I know that much I may be able to replace it.
Thanx, DAN

fuel cut solenoid loaction

the fuel cut solenoid is located on corner of the carb closest to the firewall on the passenger side. If you look at the carb from the driver side you will see plastic green electrical connection attached to a thick white electrical conduit. Follow that wire around the carb and it will lead you to the fuel cut solenoid. You will have to unplug the green connection and free the white conduit and remove the pump arm before loosening the solenoid. be careful unscrewing and removing the solenoid because there is a teeny weeny rubber gasket at the tip of the solenoid that gets old and brittle/ stretched over time and is easily lost or bunged-up.

Thanks for the info! Between the help and the hours of distraction at work, I think I'm gonna have to get me a silver star. (I thought I was the only sick fool in the world who just keeps fixing the ole beast.) Guess I get to get greasy this weekend :D Maybe I can get up to St Mary's after all! I dumped a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in and that seems to be helping some but not completely.

Well, it defies the logic that I got here by lots of folks, but try premium once you have run you tank to nearly empty. I also add a bottle of octane booster.

My truck (84 FJ60) has been running like my mother-in-laws brand new LC since I switched to premium.

Can't explain it, and when I asked, everyone told me to put the lowest grade gas available, but the pig runs like a champ with premium.
