Road trip was just a trip to pick up a revolver. Just a lot of highway driving in a day. Can’t go anywhere these days.

I thought the mpg was impressive given the condition of my tires.

Figure it's time for an update. A few months ago I started getting the death wobble. I replaced the tie rod ends and steering damper which made it better but eventually it came down to the tires. I put 40k on the BFG MT's and they were worn out but that is the most miles I've gotten out of a set of mud tires so I can't complain.

Replaced them with a set of Falken AT's so will see how they do. I knew the alignment was out since I replaced the tie rod ends so I had the local Ford dealer do an alignment today since I know the service manager and he did it himself.

Funny part was when I parked in the lot and walked into the shop. A mechanic comes up and asks if it has a 4BT. I said no it is a 6BT and you are welcome to look at it. While checking in I looked back and my hood was up and there were 5 mechanics checking it out.

I'll see if my mpg goes up with AT's. 40k since the swap and it just runs.

Been awhile since the last update. Over 50k since the conversion.

MPG with the Falken AT's hasn't changed significantly, still a little over 20 mpg. They are quieter on the road but with the Cummins is doesn't matter much. It drives better but I'm not sure if that is the tires or alignment.

Made a trip to town today. At the grocery store I came out and a guy was parked next to it waiting for me. He was all over it as his dream vehicle and confessed to being a prepper. Nice guy and we shook hands after he looked it over.

Next stop at the hardware store I popped the hood again. 2 guys asking about it. Pretty sure I could drive a Ferrari and draw less attention.

That’s why I put on a Cummins badge. Fellas at the fuel station were always wondering why a Toyota was blocking the pump. It sure turns heads when they see the Cummins turbo diesel badge and diesel hose filling the tank. Their eyes get wide when they realize there’s a Cummins under the hood. My local fuel station sure does love the commotion when the 60 rolls in for fuel.

Just looked up my old thread and realized it has been 8 years since the 6BT conversion so a short update.

It still draws attention just about everywhere I go. Couple of days ago at my local farm supply store an older gentleman walked over and just said you don't see many of these around here. The owner of the store said "you probably won't see another like this one". He knew enough to ask if it is an '85, his brother has had a '68 FJ40 since college, popped the hood, etc. Another stop to drop off a hydraulic cylinder for rebuild one of the guys walked over to say "were you just bored and had to stick a diesel in it?".

I spent some time adjusting the clutch to get more pedal travel and was just about to undertake a modification to the linkage when the slave cylinder failed. A new cylinder and futile attempts to bleed it got enough clutch to drive. Took some drive time but eventually the system cleared the air and now clutch travel is fine.

The front drive shaft has developed some excess play in the shaft section and while still functional I'm going to repair it. I don't know if this is from age, the torque of the engine, or the lift.

The radiator fan lost a couple of blades and the water pump was failing but other than normal maintenance it remains as reliable and functional as I could ask it to be.

As I've stated before without question I would do it again.
