I have been toying with the idea of putting a Fj60 9.5" axle in place of my 8". Mainly for differential strength because the two axles share the same birfs/knuckles. I would be using ifs wheel hubs to put the wms to wms out 2", which would be another advantage of conververting. What is the measurements between the center spring pins? I don't want to cut into the housing like you have to when keeping the stock center pin width of 1st gen pickups, so I was thinking about widening the center pin measurement a full 2 inches to accommodate that. So, who has put a 60 axle in their pickups? Only thing is I can't find one to save my life...

other then the rear offset sounds like your on the right track ... but you'll have to make a hybrid rear out of your pickup outers and cruiser center to make it center drop post as you go

Hes talking about a front axle

I looked into it quite a bit, and from what I could tell the major drawback was (as you found) the passenger side spring of a mini wants to sit up on the differential a bit, causing you to have to elevate the drivers spring mount to match. And since i try to stay to stay as low as possible, I decided to not go that route.

But if your going to widen the springs then you may be able to to do it, you will have other (not to impossible) hurdles to over come... depending on the tire size and and width gained you may be into your springs at full lock... shock mounting will be a little different... i guess thats all i can really think of...

do it and document it!

Hi, you can find every info you looking for in my tread. I make it short:

I used the well known kit made by everyone. Neede only to drill bigger holes in the original "perches". But my advise is to use new perches at the old "original" location.

What front hanger did you use? Same as like an all pro and marlin hanger??

I have thought about putting the 60 rear in aswell but thought my wide track 8" will do for now, plus I dont wanna spend the 600 bucks for a toybox to splitcase adapter to get an offset rear, which is what I would wanna do if I went that direction.

The spring mountig width is only like 3/8" difference between the mini truck axle and FJ60/62 axle. I am building a FJ62 axle right now to go into my 88 4 Runner. I am going to fab up my on spring perch on top of the existing perches since they are not flat on the top side of the axle by cutting the top part off and welding new material on. This will keep it nice and low. I will lengthen my existing tie rod and drag link and everything will bolt right in. I plan on cutting the diff cover off and welding a 10" pipe cap on for added durability and also shaving the drain plug.

Also with the 9.5 diff, the ring gear is bigger, but the pinion is still the same size as a 8" diff. I am doing it mainly for the added width with the IFS hub bodies to match the rear Tacoma axle that I have out back.

As mentioned above it would be easier (in the rear) to center up the 60 axle, that way you arent stuck with just cruiser cases (which are hard to get low gears in are only MAYBE as strong stock 21 spline mini case.....MAYBE). Stock mini truck axle tubes have the same OD as the ID of the 60 series housing....so they just slide in.

Interesting....build thread?

Cruiser split t-case (not the 3 or 4 "speed" 40 and 55 series tcases) is just as strong if not stronger than the 21 spline mini tcase.

Gearing is hard to get tho.

If you did a Marlin reduction box to the split tcase you would be golden.

Additionally, Last year, at the SEMA show there was a Retro Tacoma on 80 series axles with the stock taco tranny and a 80 Series Tcase. Pretty cool conversion.

Question, are the short side axles on the fj60 axle the same length as the mini truck short side axles?

no, the long side front inner of a 60 = mini.

yes...
