I'm considering buying a 60 or 62 and was wondering when the timing chain (I'm assuming chain not belt) needs to be replaced. My experience with other vehicles has told me 70,000 miles +/- on average. What is recommended here? I don't want to purchase one just to have to turn around and replace the chain immediately. What does it cost to replace one for a 60/62?

Thanks

Yea, they're gears.

But later motors, I think the 80 series and on use belts.
Anyone know which motors?

40/55/60/62 All gear driven timing
3FE powered 80's - Gear driven
8/92 & later 1FZ powered 80's... Chain

That answers that then! Thaks for everyone's input. Guess that's why I couldn't find anything when I ran a search. Do the gears give out at any certain mileage or do they run about the same life as the engine?

I changed mine (3FE) at 300,000 miles and they were fine. The cam gear is a fibrous gear and the crank gear is metal.

Factory original are both steel. If you had a fiber gear it was a replacement. Unless some other engine problem damages them they should be good for 300,000+.

Mark...

no valve shims either on 6x series- don't let the dealer/mechanic tell(sell) you otherwise!

sometimes you'd think land cruisers were beasts from mars

Mark W,

The CAM gear I pulled out was fibrous, and the dealer OEM gear I bought was fibrous.....I am talking about a 3FE. I am the original owner and the motor had never been apart until my rebuild at 300,000. I am curious as to why you have all steel, or why I didn;t?
