Hey all,

When I picked up my 71 FJ55 in Dec. I was informed by the PO that the rig needed a brake and lamp inspection to get the registration set...so a couple weeks ago I stated digging in to the electrical as nothing worked at all... Dead!

First step was to clean the 20 + years of rust off the fuse block and terminals to see what I had going in and going out.

After removing the fuse block, dousing it in deoxit and taking it to the wire wheel..it started to resemble conductive metal. After re assembling the fuse block things started to come to life... Front side running lights and on rear tail light... Still no turn signals, brake lights or head lights.

Next step...separate all the under dash modular plugs and dash switches to work and clean deoxit into the contacts.. This is key... Picked up a passenger side blinker and hazard lights.

Still no back marker lights, drivers side rear turn signal or left brake lights....

Removed the driver side tail light assembly and rear marker lights.... Mice had chewed through all the wires feeding this section plus the grounding through the tail light assembly was non existent.

Found the ends. Re-stripped and did a temporary test to see if I had a working setup...


Bingo...tail lights, blinkers and brake lights came back to life...

I was really looking forward to learning the right way to go after my gremlins - but link for pics not working for me either :frown:

At this point I'm pretty happy with my progress... But I still have no headlights and all the headlight connections to lights have been cleaned and checked...

Decided to pull the light switch again and check measurements.... Found that the modular plug feeding the low / high beam switch was cold....

Cleaned and worked it back and forth again...

never seen the deoxit...is it expensive? we have ridox where i work and it's ridiculously priced :eek:

good work on the wiring. i used weatherpack on most of my stuff since it's more weather resistant than the regular auto store connectors. in lieu of that, you may want to put some dielectric grease in your spade connectors to keep moisture from ruining your work.:cheers:
 
Deoxit is pretty inexpensive for what it does...about $15 a can...but it really rocks for old wiring and controls...I use it every day in my job cleaning old amp jacks, potentiometers and grounds etc...love it...not only does it kill the rust and oxidation...but you spray on a second coat after the initial cleaning and leave it on to prevent corrosion and oxidation from occurring later...it used to be called Cramolin back in the day and I believe the Navy used it for all there communication equipment etc..except it was super toxic and this is the consumer safe version...good call on the dielectric grease as well...love that for marine work as well.;)
