Wanted FJ40

I have been looking for an FJ40 for a while now. I passed on a really good one here locally that I am kicking myself for. CL has been dry for the past few months, so I figure maybe an add up here might bring someone out of the wood work.

I don't have a large budget, I'd like to be in the $4-6k area. At this price I figure minor rust (rear sill, rear quarters, but not something that can't wait 1-2 years for replacement), running, and either stock F/2F or V8 conversion. I prefer a 4 speed, but would do a 3 speed. Late 70's is good, but I have nothing against the 60's an early 70's either. I'm not looking for a project that gets dropped off in a crate or the rear quarters are MIA. It's not that I can't do the work, I don't have the time right now. I'd like to get something that is driving, or has very minor work to get it road worthy.

I am in the Virginia/DC/Maryland area.

That's something I would have planned out before buying one that would nee to be shipped.

Post some pics of the one you bought. I've used this website twice so far with great results http://easycarmove.com/. They only charge a $50 broker fee with no BS hidden fees once it's picked up.

Aaron at Summit Auto Transport. My old town was a PITA to get a vehicle delivered to if the vehicle wasn't coming from Washington or California. Aaron found me a transporter with a reasonable rate - over a thousand dollars cheaper than I was quoted from other carriers.

I didn't go into it half cocked buying a vehicle across the country even though my previous post was 'now I just have to figure it out how to ship it back east'. That was more of a joke as I was trying to schedule pick up date, etc. I have a broker and a transporter, it is currently on the truck and on its way. The broker has been helpful up to this point, but I reserve comments until the 40 is here safe and sound. Before I bought the vehicle I had talked to a brokers and transporters, but until it is in my possession it is still a process regardless of planning. After I bought the vehicle I actually became a little more concerned and tried to find a transporter instead of a broker, which is a little difficult. I ended up picking a broker that had really great reviews on transporterreviews.com, had an A+ with BBB, accredited with BBB, and other reviews I could find. It really comes down to what transporter is in the area and who will take for the $$$ the broker posts it for on the load board. He supposedly is using a carrier that they use a lot with no issues, so hopefully it goes well. I didn't pick the lowest bid broker because I figured the 40 would just sit there until I raised the price to something reasonable. I had quotes as low as $750 and as high as $1800. I am in the middle of the range. I did talk to Aaron and another MUD member. I would have used Aaron, but he is booked for a little while.

We actually thought about flying to LA and driving it back to DC, but I don't think our little ones want to be jammed in their car seats that long regardless of where we stop and what we do. They are just too young. We have driven cross country a couple of times before kids, but our situation is different now.

Fortunately the seller has been great to work with. I bought the 1975 Rustic Green in the classified section here from a MUD member. I have some family in LA that went and checked it out for me so it won't be completely site unseen. Plus the PO sent videos and pictures of everything.

I have bought and sold dozens of vehicles all over the country. You should be fine. I'm sure you only paid the broker a fee to get it picked up and not the full amount, correct? If that's the case and it's on the back of a truck to your locale you are good. The driver wants his cash and could give two sh!ts about your newly acquired ride. He's only worried about getting it to you safe. Make sure you get his cell # and give him a call.

Of all the years I've done this the only song and dance I have gotten was from the broker. They can be some shady cats.
 
Thanks for the input toomanytoyzz. I used a broker that gets paid once it is on the truck, not before. Some brokers want the deposit to place the order others want it when it gets loaded. I was advised by a few that the deposit up front was not good. No incentive to get your ride picked up if they already have the money. Brokers argument was that once it is loaded why pay him because you can cut out the middle man.

I wasn't going to respond to this thread anymore because I don't want to go off on a tangent in the classified section, but maybe it will help future buyers when considering distant purchases.
 
Quick response, last time I post on here:
I used a broker, Don at Motor Movers Auto Transport and they found me MB Auto Transport. It went great and Don was very helpful. It went from Newhall, CA to Alexandria, VA. It went on the load board Thursday that is was ready for the following Monday pick up, it was picked up Thursday (four days after it was ready) and delivered the following Thursday, 7 day transit.

I paid the broker the $205 fee after the truck was loaded and on it's way, not before. Some brokers want to get paid ahead of time, this is very risky and I have hear enough bad stories that I would not sign with anyone who wanted an up front fee.
The transported drove it cross county, approx. 2700mi. for a fee of $900. I paid him cash after he unloaded and I inspected the vehicle. There was no damage and I had the drivers cell phone if I needed to contact him in addition to his dispatch.

So, it took 7 days across the country, it was transported on an open trailer as I requested, and it cost a total of $1105. The seller did drive it about 15 minutes from his house to drop it off to the transporter. He was very helpful and I am glad I dealt with a good person.

I have never shipped a vehicle before so this was a new process for me. You can go to a transporter directly, but it is difficult for cross country transits unless you have a wide open schedule or deep pockets. A broker takes your info and puts it on a load board who then sits back and waits for transporters to contact them. The broker can put a price on the board or leave it open for transporters to offer to do it for a price. A good broker has a good idea what it should cost, but there is negotiation there with the transporter and you/broker. They may pick it up right away, but charge an extra $200 or they might only do it for $100 more than what the broker put on the board. That fee is transmitted to you. If your broker low balled the quote then your vehicle may sit for a while without being picked up or the transporters will tell them what their price is which will be higher than the initial quote. The location from and to has a big part in it, mine was close to LA. It probably would have been quicker or cheaper if it was in LA. On Wednesday I had a transporter call the broker said he would do it for a $1,000 ($100 more than what we had originally discussed.) I did not make a decision right away, fortunately another transporter called and said they would do it for what it was posted $900 and they could get within a day. I took it.

Did you ever locate a vehicle ? as I am looking for the same thing and live in Fairfax
