FJ40 Stock Steering shafts revisited

Thought this would be the best time to chronicle the 73-83 steering shafts for the 40 series. I am building a truck and one of these is about to be mounted into a steering tube. The first pic is the full range of shafts. From the top to the bottom:
~Shaft for 40 series with factory power steering 1/79-8/80
~Shaft for manual steering 40 series 9/72-8/80
~"Short" steering stub for a factory power steering unit 8/80-9/83
~"Long" steering stub for a manual steering 8/80-9/83
~Collapsible steering shaft for either power steering truck or manual steering truck

Does anyone know if the first shaft in the picture, "40 series with factory power steering 1/79-8/80" will work for as a replacement on a 71? I am adding PS using a mini truck box. My truck has the one piece shaft. I am looking for a steering coupler to weld on to the shaft, but if I can use a newer shaft with the coupler already on it, that would be better.

The later shaft will not be a direct bolt-in as the shaft tube from the later model would need to come over as well. You could bolt-in the later model shaft/shaft tube, but you need to manage through the turn signal and other issues. I would work with the existing shaft that you have. I would start looking at the factory joint used with mini-trucks as a way of bridging the gap. Would be happy to connect via phone if you would like as this discussion could really spiral. Great thread. I'm wondering if the pin is a loose fit or press fit on the late model shafts and how do you take apart the 2 shafts? Thanks.

Cut & reweld 1980 shaft

Below is the one piece shaft from a 1980 FJ40 with manual steering. We cut 30mm out, welded it, then put a sleeve over the weld. Should be plenty strong.

Old thread, but this is exactly what I was looking for. I'm wondering something similar to thetoyotaman..... does that little cross pin push out. I hammered on it a bit but it is really in there. I'm guessing a press will work, but don't want to wreck it.

I was going to push the pin out, and drill a new hole 30mm further down the shaft (then cut the extra off the top). Anyone see a problem with this?

If not, I'm going to cut that bottom shaft and remove the 30mm and weld it back together..... but still kind of need to get that pin out

I ended up pressing the pin out with a shop press going slowly and had the machine shop cut and redrill that hole. Don't forget to put the new seal on before you put the pin in.

Thank you for putting this information all in one place. The one thing that was not 100% clear is what is the diameter of the one-piece 72-80 manual shafts and PS shafts. My manual shaft is measuring about .75 or 19mm od. Is the one piece PS shaft the same diameter or smaller? Sorry I'm slow.

Yes I read that but he also shows a picture of the "early" shaft being 15mm, which is not correct.

Does the stub slide within the coupler? If not, it could be jammed. You should be able to get some in and out movement from this.

Pry off the boot, most of these parts should still be available. Better yet, check their availability prior to disassembling. The parts that you want are:
COVER, STEERING GEAR DUST 45222‑30030
RING, HOLE SNAP (FOR DUST COVER) 90521‑52003
RING, O (FOR DUST COVER) 90301‑23054

Like $20 or so in total.

Noticed the parts are for power steering

Do you have part numbers for manual steering dust o ring etc

I know this is an old thread but can you tell me where the o ring goes in relation to the dust cover. the dust cover on mine is still partially in tact but the o ring is missing so i cant reverse engineer. would it go over the dust cover to hold it tight against the shaft? Thanks for your help.
