any chance it could be the box? the box basically just routes the fluid, correct? don't think it could be responsible for a sudden on and off of power?

That's what I'm wondering as well. I took a look at mine today, serpentine belts seems tight and doesn't appear to slip. I did find a big vertical loop in the return circuit, just ripe for a bubble in the highest point. But it's the return, so should that cause intermittant/poor performance?

If your belt is slipping you 'should' be able to hear it squeal as you turn the wheel while siting still or moving slowly, especially when your steering hits the stops.
But I suppose silent slipping is certainly possible.

A cheap way to check if the belt is slipping is to go by your local NAPA (or other auto parts shop) and pick up a can of spray-on belt dressing.
You can also get it in stick form that you rub on the belt, but I prefer to use the spray-on stuff.
If the belt is old and glazed it breaks/dissolves that surface, softeners it up again and provides a refreshed/sticky surface ....... which stops the slipping.

I do get a whine when turning the tires while stopped, quite a bit actually, not sure if it is the belt, box or pump? I know I can move the tensioner by pulling a bit on the serpentine from the other side. Plan to replace one thing at a time and eventually I will get there! :)

now, I just gotta find some free time!

The whine probably indicates the pump if your fluid isn't low.

I concur. The pump that I had go bad would whine under load at idle.
Replace the daggum pump wouldja?! I is the cheapest thing in the link and if you get one from a big box store you will have one with a lifetime warranty.

Hey Dom, glad to see your wife let you out to play on the computer.

:flipoff2:

jeez Noah, kinda' hard on the newlywed!

I think I'm gonna' replace my pump and see what happens. I'll let you know after I get back from my fieldtrip. :hillbilly:

New pump installed. No material change to steering after four hours replacement. Very stiff and no return to center ( which it has never accomplished anyway). Drove it on gravel and pavement for several hours and my arms are pretty tired. Wah. Wah.

Any suggestions on what to look at before pulling the winch and attempting adjustment to saginaw box?
