how many of you use your fj40 as a daily driver for commuting to work etc...? i read on one of the buying threads that it is not recommended for a DD. what do you guys think? i have a 91 wrangler that i have as a DD for the last couple of years and suits me fine, i would have thought the fj 40 would be a step up!

I daily drive mine, outside of paying out the @$$ in fuel it's great. A stock FJ40 would make an sweet DD. If you aren't too worried about your fuel bill the a 40's the way to go. Plus you will turn allot of heads and you just look so damn cool

Yep.
Mine's driven daily to work as well... sucky part is going into the parking garage with a RHD though!

AHHH True True never thought about that. Holy **** how the heck do you go through a drive through?

Yup

DD mine up 101 in the bay area every day. I like the adrenaline rush I get from merging onto the freeway every day as a good substitute for morning coffee. I do about 15 miles to work and, to be honest, if I had to do more I'd probably trade her in for a 60-series.

If you are on the freeway in a 40, unless the firewall and floor has been heavily insulated, it is going to be very loud. When I give a nearby coworker a ride home once or twice a week, we end up yelling at each other.

And yes, the gas sucks. The way I look at it, you are paying about $100 extra a month to not drive a plastic modern piece of sh*t.

Fun as s*** though, especially when you take shortcuts over curbs.

Cheers,
prat

depends what your D D involves. 5 miles acrosss town....hell yeah.
50 miles on the interstate....one way....not so much.

i ran mine 50 miles a day for several years. at the time it was great, that was before gas was an arm and both legs.
it still goes once in awhile, but the 60 has me spoiled now.

I use mine as a DD when I'm between cruiser projects that routinely drain my bank account, and when it isn't raining (top is off and have been too lazy to put it back on) it hasn't left me high and dry yet.

x100 on the noise, you get it up to 2500-3000 RPM, it's screaming:grinpimp:

It ain't built for comfort, so if you don't like squeaking, rattling, smelling exaust etc...

I rock my 40 up 101 every day too. Only from 85 to San Antonio though; I've never seen you.

if it was a stock fj40 on maybe like 31s i could dd. but mine on 35, i would hate to drive everyday. to much gas and waist my tires to much.

A 40 with a 2F and 35s is not that bad. My friend runs 36 tsl's with his 2F. He drives it every day 70 or so miles. I think he averages 9 or 10 MPG which in a 40 is not bad. Plus you don't buy a Land Cruiser for the Gas mileage, you buy a Land Cruiser to get one up on your neighbor :D or something like that. Lets face it LAND CRUISER=$$$

I'm just north of that, from Marsh up to 92. I'm the one with the stupid paint job: the 2x PO painted the top half white and the bottom half a blue that anticipated the current FJ Cruiser. I love that piece of sh*t though.

Is your BJ a stock 3b? I was going to go look at a 60 that had a 3b swapped into it this weekend, but decided that it didn't have enough oomph to deal with 101 merging.

And since I'm hijacking anyway, where do you wheel around here? I only wheel when I go back up to sac, where I actually know and like people.

Yeah, I'm a stock 3B. Lets be honest, in the morning you could merge onto 101 at a brisk walk. That aside, I've never had trouble merging, even when traffic is moving. Sometimes I get on at a bit below the speed of traffic, but never had a dangerous speed-bump moment. I'm on 31's. A 60 might be a bit heavier though...?

There is a local group, Mountain Transit Authority (mta4x4.com) that I contacted, but I never met up with them; truck keeps breaking and I want to bring it to their monthly meeting. Other than that I've only had it for <6mo.s so I haven't made any trips at all. I took the other truck down to Pismo once, but thats about the same distance as to the mountains.

::pretending not to hijack:: The moral of the story being, you can, and should DD your 40.

If you love your 40 driving in any condition is a pleasure town or country.

DD on 35" AT's, 30 miles to and from work a day, It's more a way of life than a car.
Comp Truck on 35" Simex Extreem Trekker II or the At's

during the summer months I DD mine everyday that it isn't raining. About 15 miles each way for me to work...Like Matt said, it's something you must love.... Right now, I drive my 40 more than I do my '07 Dodge Ram CTD. Diesel is $4.49 a gallon so driving the Cruiser is costing less to drive........never thought I would say that........
