FJ40 4spd shifter problems

I have a 76 FJ40 w/ chevy 350, Toyota 4spd transmission, Toyota 3spd transfer case -I have it down to the frame and just started the frame / rebuild.

The engine mount is home made, mounted to the front of the block and uses the stock FJ mounts. the transfer case mount is a better quality aftermarket.

the transmission is pushed forward, the hump was cut and the shifters heated and bent. is this normal how do I get the trans back in its proper spot?

Welcome.

Judging by the angle on that shifter, the engine is located pretty far forward.

You would need to relocate the engine mounts in order to get the transmission back into its proper spot.

my question is: with a 350 engine is it normal to have the trans farther forward than the stock position? is the problem the homemade engine mount using the stock FJ mounts

mine is farther forward then stock position with AA mounts ( www.advanceadapters.com ) and i had to bend my 4sp shifter to clear the heater. do you have pics of the install ? how far forward is it ? how much space between water pump and radiator ? you might try a search (use search function above) and search for chevy engine mounts or motor mounts or even chevy engine position and you should find a lot of info.

good luck!

How far back from the front cross member are your front engine mounts? My install went back 19" per Downey's V8 install instructions.
Since this is a frame off, I'd pull the motor and tranny/tcase as a unit and remove the front Toyota motor mounts so you can install some V8 motor mounts from Downey, AA or the other vendors out there. Clean and paint your frame then put the engine and tranny back in. Voila, done!

Get yourself a copy of the V8 conversion manual for free from Jim at Downey Offroad. They rule.

The best way would be with a ranger overdrive
Ranger Torque Splitter Overdrives & Underdrives

If you keep your motor far enough forward to maintain proper fan to radiator distance , the shifters end up under the heater. Pulling the motor back , giving transmission placement priority, and you end up with either electric fans or a ten inch shroud. You then also are shift weight off the front axle and compromise hill climbing abilities.
Dropping weight off the front end is great for high speed off road travel and nasty descents but if you do a lot of climbing you'll notice a loss of front end traction. The longer automatics let you position the engine forward. If you keep a standard, the Ranger slips between the motor and tranny adding enough length to keep a stock tranny position and keep your motor far enough forward to keep it running cool in an Arizona summer.........As a side benefit..27% overdrive
On another note I've found to optimum position for V-8 mounts to be 11.75"~12.5" ,center of shock tower to center of motor mount

I completely agree with lcwizard. Yes, it is normal that the tranny would go about 4" forward on the typical engine swap:
(a) moving the engine rearward normally results in overheating.
(b) moving the engine rearward also results in a loss of front-end traction.
(c) use of the longer Marks adapter has some down-side (either flywheel spacing or spud shaft)
(d) if you've got the cash flow, the Ranger is a great choice, and it will get the tranny back to a dang close original local.
PM me your mailing address and I'll send you our freebie V8 inst. manual.
