Hi there i am new to the site and i have tried to search the site but i was skunked. i have a 1972 fj40 with the factory 3 speed. my dad has an 87 fj60 with the 4 speed. the fj60 is broke down and i now have the permission to pull the 4 speed and put it into my fj40. i am looking for some tips and some how to for the do it yourself guy. Also would it be practical to swap over the P/S.
Thanks
Zach

Whats wrong with the 60?

Trans support

Question: Do you have the equipment, material and know-how to build a cross member to support the cogbox swap ? If no, you just as well pull the plug on this idea

The fj60 has some clutch issues the suspension is not up to par and some other issued that i am not all that sure about. it's my dads old truck. although these aren't hard repairs the fj40 belonged to my dad he bought it when he was 14 and then passed it on to me. him and i got to talking and decided that a lot of money could be saved and since he plans to get rid of the truck and i would much rather dump time and money into the fj40 i figure i would use the parts i have at hand. As for fabricating anything i have access to welders and cutters and other types of machines that will allow to make things work. i just would like some pointers.

The later model 4 speed from a 60 will be more challenging to install in a 40, mosty because of the split transfer case - you'll probably need to fab a rear mount to support the transfer and will need to address the parking brake issue (no parking brake on the split case). You would be better off finding a tranny and transfer from a 40 series with a transfer case mounted parking brake and install that. Or use your 3 speed xfer on a 4 speed.

You may want to search on here, check the FAQs, and research further before digging in to the 60 for the 4 speed. I did the 3 to 4 speed swap in my 72 and the 4 speed stuff was really easy to come by.

Good luck!

My vote is to use the 2F, 4 speed tranny from fj60, mated to the 3 spd transfer...

if you are not a hard core wheeler then sell the 60 use the money to buy a 40 4 speed and related parts and they will all bolt in nice and simple .or someone on here would probably trade you the parts you need for the 60 parts good luck

Thanks for the input guys. i am think i'm going to take a stab at it. I think i can tackle this and make it work. my plans are to have this done by christmas. this is not my everyday truck so i have time to fabricate and make this work. i would appreciate any further input i am interested in learning all i can to further better my cruiser. i am not the best but i am no stranger to a wrench. if i am not mistakin i think the my dads fj60 is not a split transfer case. i will look and double check myself. Thanks again.

Good luck with this. I also have the original 3 spd trans in my '68 and have thought about this same conversion. Other than the parking brake issue/TC issues, I wonder if there are any advantages/disadvantages of the later FJ60 4 speed over the earlier FJ40 4 speed??

trying

I have done a 79 4 speed into a 71 but am not familiar with the split case

But, I would seriously do a search and see if anyone has done it successfully before and try to get ideas there. If no posts on it then
you are probably looking at a bigger can of worms than you would want.

Also if you are pulling the tranny maybe it is time to think about a 2F 4 speed swap if that interests you

I got the 4 speed/xfer/and 2F all together for 500 bucks so just a tranny might be pretty cheap and you can keep all your 3 speed clutch bits if you want to use them for the 4 speed ---this kinda swap 3 to 4 speed is well covered in the FAQs

But if you are convinced than show us and tell us how you do it!

Good luck either way:cheers:

did a 74 4 spd into a 69 f

I like your attitude. This is not rocket science. You have all the wit and genius of ihbmud.com to help you through the tough parts. and till christmas, lots of time.

i am not sure, but there was an issue with the bolt pattern of the fj60 tranny and the bolt pattern on the back of both the f and 2f engines. i am not real sure on this, but you have a ways to go before you will know.

after all my work, i really would have liked to have done a frame off restoration with mine. consider that you might be there as well, after you put in this much labor and $$$.

take pictures along the way and post em up. best blessing to you.

This swap uses the same basic mounting configuration as a 5spd conversion..........

Common as dirt........

Hi All:

Sorry, this won't work.

The output shaft spline count of a 1972 J30 three-speed transmission is different than that of a H42 four-speed transmission that came in a '87 FJ60.

Thus, the '87 transmission won't bolt-up to the 1972 era transfer case. IIRC the H42 four-speed transmission used between 1975-79 would bolt-up to the earlier t-case.

Alan

My 72 has the SBC 350 and that is where i am wondering about the swap. as for the transfer case i plan to move the whole 9 yards over. i'm even considering possibly wheel to wheel axles too. i hear some talk about the trans being split but i'm possitive this one is not i will take a look in case i have gotten my wires crossed. i will definately keep you guys posted. is it best to just post pics into this same thread or just start a new one when i have them ready to post?

You should have.......

Tons of info on "Torque Tube" cross member relocation ;)

With the FJ60 stuff and a SBC it is not impossible to do. It just depends on what you want to end up with. With a Downey adapter bellhousing it will fit with minimal drama. You should be able to keep the rear crossmember where it is too. For the rear support you can trim down the tranny support to fit your 40 frame rails.

To provide an alternative: Take the knuckles and steering from the 60, do a rear disc brake swap with integrated e-brake calipers, slide the motor tranny as far forward as you can with the heater in place and make sure it clears the rear crossmember. You may have to bend the shifter a little to clear depending on where stuff ends up. Might depend on where the shift tower is on the FJ60 4 speed vs. the 40 version. If the tower is on the back side of the tranny cover it makes for more room. Heres a pic to help
