My FJ40 is ready to hit the road after my long over due frame off resto. I am looking to get some new wheels and tires. I have been reading threads like crazy trying to figure out what I should get. Here are some details on what I had and currently have. When I purchased my FJ it had nearly new 33x12.5 BFG MTs but they got stolen when I had them off the vehicle during my build, lame!! The original rear quarter panels were cut out with flares but have since been replaced. I purchased some temporary 33x10.5 BFG AT to get me by until it was running. They are probably more than 10 yrs old and not in that great of condition. At one point I had purchased some 15" wagon wheels and had them powder coated off white to match the top. I am considering selling all the wheels that I have and buying the following from Summit. Does anyone see an issue with this set up? Part of the reason I want to stick with the 285/75/16 is because that is the same size as my 02 Tundra and would like the option to swap wheels tires around.

no hub cap provision? Have you looked at the wheels sold by CityRacer?

City Racer is about $260/wheel vs $120-140 depending if I go with 16x8 or 16x7. I can live without the clips for hub caps. But they do look nice!

If it is a frame off restoration back to original why not go with OEM steel and hubcaps? :meh:

4 inch backspacing with 33 inch tires may pose a problem......
I currently have 33 inch tires but not sure on the back spacing of the wheels. They seem to fit pretty good. I am also looking at going with 16x7 265/75/16 which might make more sense to keep from bashing up my new quarter panels if the 285s end up being to wide.

I have not done everything stock/OEM so it is more of cost/functionality/look than anything.

4" backspace will most likely require wheel spacers.Wheel vintiques would look good painted or powder coated a shade of factory gray :steer:

Per @love2fly and a few other on here, they do not require spacers. I was definitely thinking a powder coated gray and adding some wheel center caps.

I tried wheels from Wheel Vintiques. Special order and I specified a 3 1/2" backspace which they agreed to and I confirmed in an email. $900 and five weeks later the wheels appear and don't fit, they rub the TRE's. Called Wheel Vintiques and was told they can't guarantee a specific backspace. All I can assume was the backspacing was done by someone who just didn't give a s**t about what the order was and simply did whatever they wanted to do. On the plus side they did pay for the return shipping and gave me a full refund.

Ordered one US Wheel from Summit to check the fit and their 3 3/4" backspace was good enough to clear the TRE's so I ordered 4 more.

What was the wheel size that you ordered from WV? Sorry to hear it didnt work out. If you had 4" of backspacing would it have worked due to the wider wheel size?

15x10 Steelies. Maybe if I had ordered 16x9 or 17x9 the fit might have been ok but I would worry then about the tires rubbing something when turning.

After a long drawn out process, I decided to pull the trigger on a (5) 16x7 wheels from Summit along with 265/75/16 BFG AT tires. I figured this would be a good size to start with. It meets the min width for the tires and if I want to stick some 285s on there at a later date from my truck it shouldn't be a problem as long as I can find a shop willing to install them. I am going to sell the 15" wagon wheels and aluminum wheels that I currently have. I have asked Summit to see if they will price match Performance Plus Tires which appears to be selling them for $108 vs the $144 Summit is asking. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks for all the input and @love2fly for the great write up on these.

They came down on price some to $118/ea and with their added discounts they matched up pretty close with Performance. They are shipping them w/o mount/balance so I can paint them before having them mounted but no credit back, bummer. I changed my tire size to 235/75/16 as well after reading the Holly Grail article again for the 3rd time haha. I figured that gaining a little height and less rubber on the pavement with the 2F would be a good thing.

IMHO that article is misleading. Not knocking the author, but nowhere does he talk about ride comfort, and I can tell you that my 235's + washboards = unbearable. All 255 and 235 are E-rated, which ride rough even on a heavy 80 series. Hopefully you have better suspension than OME or additional weight. I'm reverting to 15" C rated. YMMV

Good to know, I figured they would be a bit stiff but hopefully not unbearable. I know when I got 285 BFG AT on my Tundra they felt really stiff but now they ride great and I hardly notice them. Not sure if I got used to it or if the tire "settled in". I don't have extra weight nor do I have anything special for suspension.

I have 235 85 16, to me the perfect fj40 tire size, but I also like 255 85 16. These are the wheel vintiques, 4”backspace 16x7.

The Pirelli Scorpion Mudders I have are 235/85r16 and are NOT E rated! Look em up!
