I posted in FJ section. My charcoal canister has a stuck valve. Don't want to spend $600-1k for a new plastic box filled with charcoal, let alone $200-300 for a used one. Any cheap fix or way of bypassing the system sensors and still pass emissions/not trigger CEL? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Doing a quick bit of research that fault is usually associated with the evap self testing system which applies a vacuum to the tank to test for a leak. A vacuum switching valve runs about $60 from what I can see online, but I'd want to inspect it and the wiring first. I've also found the canister (oem Toyota) for under $300.

Basically I'd be checking the vacuum pump, lines, valve, etc before I bought any expensive parts.

Thanks for the reply. Unless I'm misinformed, there are two valves. An external one (which is the replaceable one you're referring to), and an internal one which is throwing this code. I didn't see any cracks or anything unusual with wiring or vacuum line.

Here's a link to someone that had a similar issue, but the code by the OP is not quite the same as yours. Maybe some info here will be useful. As far as bypassing the system and keeping the check engine light out I am unaware of any easy way of doing that. It's a major part of the emissions system with not only sensors checking the integrity of the gas tank seals but also checking the purge system as well.

If you haven't already it might be worth the time to have your local shop or a trusted specialist run some diagnostic tests on it so if you do have to get some costly parts for it you could do so with confidence.

still having issues with this. toyota says i need a new charcoal canister and I don't want to spend $1200 for a new one. I'm getting the CEL and Trac Off light along with codes P2420 and P0441. Anyone in the area free to help me diagnose/fix? I'm hoping it's just the vsv? and i don't trust my dealer.

i don't trust my dealer

Having worked at four different Toyota dealers some years back, as well as two independent shops before that, I get it. Even though the dealership is the last bastion for auto repair, it doesn't mean you're going to get a competent tech to fix your vehicle.

The things I've seen...

The code supposedly says a valve switch is stuck open so I'm assuming it's the VSV and not necessarily the whole charcoal canister.

I’d be happy to help with this. My shop charges $110/hr. My guess is we could diag this in an hour or less. We are in West Chester if that’s local to you. With our smoke machine could easily prove if it’s a vsv or canister, and if canister can give options other than sourcing an OEM one. A few of the guys in here can vouch for our work.

i havent done much except take it to the dealer. i checked the connections and gas cap and nothing seems out of the ordinary. the CEL comes on and off and has now stayed on.

Dealer is wanting to charge me $1300 for a charcoal canister and can't promise that's the problem. Yea, no thanks! =T
