88 stock fj-62, the engine dies at idle, when in drive, (automatic transmission) the best way to describe what it is doing would be to say that its almost like the clutch is never being engaged. when put in drive the engine will act its working too hard when its stopped, and then die. when in park or nutral the engine runs fine, when in drive or any other gear its acting like a manual trany out the clutch engaged... any ideas?

How many miles on the truck? Sounds like you need to do some transmission investigation. Drain the fluid, check to see what kind of shrapnel you find, pull the pan, wash the filter. You'll need two replacement gaskets, one for the pan, the other for the filter housing. If you find stuff in the fluid, let us know. I'd do search in this forum, lots of info on A440F transmissions.

5 words.."Rodney Flush" and "Rodney Party Trick" lots of info here regarding those two interventions.

Nothing short of a rebuild will help if the frictions are toasted but if the governor is sticking for example, then the above can help greatly.

Sounds like your Torque Converter is locked up to me. Unfortunately the only way to fix that issue it to replace or repair (trans shop) the converter.

I have a stock A440 Converter that I can have rebuilt for you if you are interested.
