I recently decided to get my 1988 FJ painted. After shopping around in the Houston Area, I decided to go with Star Toyota in League City. We've been taking our Toyotas there for the last 20 years and have had good experience overall with their service. Paint and Body agreed to take pictures of the job along the way. Here are some of the pictures of their progress so far. Enjoy.

wow. i thought your before picture was an After shot

Me too. That seriously looked better than my paint.

How much are they charging if you don't mind me asking? I really need to get mine repainted. You're local so I was just curious :D

What the before pictures are not showing (I didn't take them, Star did) is that on the hood and roof, I'm down to the primer due to sun damage. The cruiser has been garage-kept until the last 4 years when I took it off to college with me.

I got a few quotes for just repainting the upper half and fixing the rust one was $5,700 and the other $7,200. I was quoted around $6,300 at Star for the WHOLE vehicle and rust fixing. However the price just increased yesterday when I was informed my windshield broke.. I'm sitting just under $7,000 right now.

Expensive, yes, but I'm planning to keep it forever (in the garage as a weekend driver). So I didn't want a half-done job.

They told me upfront that if the windshield had been replaced before it was probably glued in an would break when they tried to pull it out. That price difference also covers a bit of rust they fount on the passenger's side as well. So they're not charging me all 700 or so just for the windshield.

Honestly, not to be rude. But I know body & paint and you are getting man raped paying what you are for a Toyota dealership to paint your truck.

You could, and should have gone to a professional body and paint shop. You would have received a better job and most likely cheaper. but hey if you got money to burn good for you

and FYI unless you signed some type of agreement mentioning the problem removing the windshield, the shop is responsible for replacing any broken pieces to your vehicle while working on it.

Honestly, I shopped around a lot before putting this kind of money on the table (two years). I went to custom paint and body shops, and some on the corner that just do insurance claims. When it comes to paint and rust repair, I think its safe to say you get what you pay for. I only wanted to get this job done once, and I wanted it done right. I got quotes for 3000 and quotes for over 14k with varying paint types, plans for fixing the rust, and warranties. I felt the best about going with Star because I've had good success in the past. I wanted the job done right, and knew they wouldn't cut corners. In the end, I'd rather pay a little more to have the job done right, than risk 3k for a crappy job, and have to re-do it.

ooo shiney

Nice job. It's expensive, but it looks like it will be done right.

Good color scheme too. A local guy here has one exactly the same, so I assume it's factory paint?

Looks dammmm nice! Silver/grey combo is one of the best for 60/62's!

Me Envious!!!!!

Doug
