FJ 62 mileage over 16 mpg

Just did a round trip from atlanta, ga to savannah ga.
1988 FJ 62 with 185,000 miles
averaged 14.523 mpg with a total mileage of 749.704
filled up every 100 or so miles, mostly highway miles at 65mph
best was 16.339mpg for the first 95 miles
next best 15.996 for a 163 mile stretch
worst was 13.417 with some intown driving

so the average in dollars is:
I get 3.63 miles to the dollar
got to love landcruisers to drive them

You doing anything special to get this? Around town I'm about 7.5, and doing 60 on the freeway I get 11. I'm pretty well tuned so it should be better.

check your fuel pressure damper (located on the fuel rail towards the back by the firewall. It's been shown that if the little screw comes out, your mileage will drop. I just replaced mine and it increased dramatically.

My absolute best was 17 exactly driving from Spokane to Everett, WA via HWY 2. A 300 mile trip.

Never even came close to that one again.

Tonkota - did you replace the screw or the damper itself? I am thinking of replacing mine in an effort to save gas!

I use the same pump to refuel when checking mpg... different pumps pressure cut off happens to vary greatly. If I cannot then I take the time to top off to the top of the filler neck. this way my refueling is not dependant on the pump but the actual amount of fuel consumed.

You could replace just the screw, but who knows how long it is, or how far to thread it in. I bought a new one from NAPA which had a rivet instead of a screw. But it had a hole in it, spewing gas everywhere. I bought an oem part and put it on. It still has the screw, and a new cap.

I made a 22mm wrench to do the job. I cut it off and made a 90* out of it. Measure back about 2" or 2 1/2" (not rocket science). It worked well, I can change it out in less than 15 minutes.

Even with the most different pumps, your readings will be within 0.1 mpg. I wouldn't recommend filling up to the top like that. Expansion and such....

Check to make sure the screw is there, and if it is, make sure it's snugged down onto the dampener. Drive for a few tanks of gas to see if your mileage goes up. I didn't bother replacing my dampener (just snugged the screw down) and it still works like new. Or at least I assume it does. My mileage went up when I fixed it

You were lucky you still had the screw!! That is one great reason to keep that cover on the damper!

I was not so lucky, I tossed the cover aside.

Hey guys, checked my screw. Yep, it's there but completely out. Now my problem...can't get it to thread back in. It's so small and in a weird spot.
