FJ 60 won't start

About a week ago my FJ 60 AKA Rusty, didn't start. It turned over, but never started. I eventually killed the battery. Had to get a ride home. Went back armed with starter fluid and jumper cables. After a time Rusty started and I was on my way, though fairly cold (I got an ovation when it started from some people waiting for the train.)

I haven't driven it since. Today I went out to start it and it started with the starter juice but would soon die. Consequently, the battery died again.

So it starts with an ether blast but quickly dies.

Any ideas? I suspect the fuel pump because I don't hear it anymore (electric) but I haven't heard it for a while so I am not sure.

This is my DD, my park-n-ride car. With all the snow here I would rather have 4WD than my 2WD truck.

The FJ60 has a mechanical fuel pump (runs off the cam shaft) not electric, unless it has been changed. There is a window on the front of the carburetor. When the pump is working properly it should be about 1/2 up the window. If you don't see any gasoline in the window, then it could be a problem with your fuel delivery system. This could either be the fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter, or a clogged or collapsed fuel line.

So I looked at the fuel filter and found it was dry ( when I blew through the filter inlet, not much air came out the other side.)

Now the weird part. I have an electric fuel pump and a mechanical fuel pump (thanks lehi and trapp for the 411 with regard to location.)

The electric pump's fuse was blown so I replaced it and it started to make noise, ( I guess the sound means it was trying to pump.)

From the electric pump, the fuel hose goes into the filter, and from the filter the fuel hose goes into the mechanical pump. WTF?
Is this common? Something like a power assist? I am stumped.

Though the elec. pump makes noise, no fuel is getting to the filter.

If anybody has insight I would appreciate it.

The reason for the electric pump is likely because the mechanical pump is shot. take the hose that is going from the elect pump to the mechanical pump out and see if it is pumping fuel when you turn the ign (ON) , use a container .
Don't remove the mechanical pump , as it hold the oil from leaking out. But you can bypass it.
I would replace the filter.
From your discription, I think you need a new fuel pump.

If you are going to get a new mechanical pump (my suggestion as well), I ordered a Carter and as far as I could tell, it was OEM (or it sure looked exactly like the OEM I removed). And don't forget the spacer. Do the filter at the same time too.

Here's the part's schematic. The inlet (from the fuel tank) is the port on top that is farther away from the engine. The return (excess fuel back to the fuel tank) is the port on top that is closest to the engine. The outlet (to the carburetor) is the port near the base of the pump. If you purchase the insulator (spacer) from toyota, it comes with the gaskets bonded to it, from what I remember. Here's a post with some pic's: https://forum.ih8mud.com/3682179-post2.html

Wow, thanks for all the advice. I will get on it.

My fuel situation is strange. My electric pump blew a fuse months ago. One day when I turned the key there was no pump sound, but it still started so I didn't do anything about it. However, it hesitated when moving from a stop. I just gave it extra gas to get it up to speed.

I'm guessing the mech pump still worked, but poorly.

I should have seen this one coming. Teach me to procrastinate.
