Uh yea I'm beginning to agree with Jon on this. B/c I just went down to th garage and checked the wiring for the umteenth time and re-connected all the plug wires Again. So I though maybe I should look at the AMF thing again so I unhooked the Bat and removed the 2 little screws, saw the pins and pushed it back again. So now it won't even start at all.

Can someone help me find the post on fixing that little gem

IIRC a new unit from Tojo is lots of sheckles. Try sourcing a used one from www.cruiserparts.net. I "think" they are the same part number as one from an FJ62 so you should have 4 years of parts to look through. Not sure about that though. Give C-Dan or John Hocker a jingle and get the skinny on that before you purchase one.

Also, the connector headshell has a spring clip that lifts up to clear the locking tabs. Same design as the ISC connector on the throttle body.

Jon, just removed the top of AFM to have a better look. Looks to me that all the connectors are in place. Should they be soldered to the circuit board? As of now I can slide them out if take the screws out of the side of the AFM. Yes I Unhooked the battery first. So Far I haven't found any pics or decent posts on the subject. Starting to look like I'll be bumming a ride to work tomorrow.

I'll bet my paycheck that the AFM needs to be repaired or replaced.

I accidentally did the same thing you did a while back, but since I know how to solder, instead of shelling out the $$$ for a new/used AFM, I soldered it back together.

There are three EXTREMELY delicate connections behind the plug, you may have pulled them off tho board.

Advanced search, 80-Section, "posts" radio button, Keywords=AFM, solder

Returns 5 posts. These 2 are the most relevant. Pics in the first of the 2. I have not read the entire threads so I don't know if these are precisely what you need but this is a start and other keywords along with "AFM" might yield different results (e.g. Repair, fix, replacement, problem)

Take it from the Wulf. (The first link is my post.. :hillbilly:)

It's actually fairly simple to repair it, provided you know what all is broken.

Take it from the Wulf.

Searching is harder now that the forum is mature (almost 5yrs for the 80-Section) and has ~25,000 threads and ~350,000 posts. The secret is selecting the right keywords and you gave us the idea of using solder. However, if you can select the right keywords or author then the SEARCH function works perfectly and is extremely fast.

:D

Yeah... that's a lot of threads.

Ok I've searched the forum and got a lot of info on the AFM. What I really want to know is are the 3 connectors supposed to soldered to the solder pads on the board or are they just supposed to make contact? Each one of the pins has a looped metal band on the end. Each one is offset a little, are they supposed to be straight off the end of the pin. i don't have a problem trying to solder it but I need to know if it is in fact broken.

Here are some pics, as you can see the pins are not secure. should they be?

Is it the two pins I highlighted in the pic?

Oh, I see it now.

Yes, all three of those pins are supposed to be secured to the pads below them.

Make SURE you are EXTREMELY CAREFUL with those pins. They are VERY delicate. I don't know how else to tell you that.

Ok so if I'm really good I can re-solder those back on the pads and hope for the best. Bat is still disconnected. worst case I'm looking at buying a used AFM. Best case i get it re-soldered and drive it to work in the morning.

Good luck, bud.

You can find used AFMs for ~$40, 1991-1994. I'm not sure if 93-94 AFMs are compatible with 91-92, though. Check with CDan on that.

Check the air intake tube for cracks. Again. You know, for s***s and giggles.

Lets see....intake tube, vacuum lines....I think that about covers it.

Again, good luck.

Holy S**t it worked. Its running better than ever. Thank you to Jon and ika1988 without you 2 I would have probably had it towed to the dealer. I owe you both a bunch. Thanks Again :beer::beer:

Good work. Now put the cover back on, LOTS of silicone, and don't pull those screws out again.

If you need to get the plug out again, there is a small metal clip that goes around it. Pull that off, the plug will come right out.
